First make sure you sensor bar is plugged into your wii correctly, and it is centered and on the top of your TV.
If you still have the problem then you need to sync your remote with the wii. Do this by holding down the red sync button on the remote, located under the battery cover on the back, while holding down the red sync button on the wii, located next to the SD Card slot.
If it still doesn't work, that means you have a bad sensor bar, you can get a new one at wal-mart for $20. To make sure that it is not the sensor bar, take a video camera and take a quick video of your sensor bar while it is plugged in and the wii is on. In the video, if you see five LED lights on both sides of the bar than it is fine.
Hope this helps!

Hi there I had this problem as well and eventually realised you have to have the wii nunchuck attached before it will let you select, I don't think it tells you to but you do need it.

Doesn't get past the language screen

This happened to me and my problem was the sensor plug wasn't clicked all the way into the console. It was kind of confusing because the A button worked, but I couldn't do anything when I got to the language select screen. To select the language, you have to wave the remote in front of the screen until a cursor appears (it is in the shape of a hand).

Can not get past language screen

We had the same issue. Select your language first by pointing the controller and hitting the "a" button. Then, point the controller down to the bottom of the screen. There is a "confirm" or "OK" at the bottom right of the screen that you can't see.

I bought sonic and the secret rings for the wii! buy my son has changed the language and i have no idea how to get it back to english? its making it really hard to play the game

Restart the game. There should be 4 (unreadable) menu options. Select the 4th - lowest right on the screen. This is the options menu.

On the options menu select the top heading and a sub menu will open on the right. The second item down is for English Language. Select and then when you go back through the menus they should change back to English.
