Well I had the same problem and was freaking out because NONE of the suggestions I could find online were working. I was just about to give up when I didnt have the batteries in for about 15 to 2o minuetes. So I put the batteries back in and wala. The System works witht the cartridges. SO we will be storing the system with out batteries from now on.

We had the same problem. Put alcohol on a q-tip. Pull back the plastic sleeve on the Smartridge (game) and clean both sides of the metal contact. Insert the Smartridge into the Smartridge slot and remove quickly. Then insert Smatrige and turn on the power.
I did this to all of the games and now it works like new!
I did two things for my son's cyber pocket - first I took the batteries out and pressed the buttons inside the battery area for over a minute - put the batteries back in and it didn't work. Took them out again and pressed the on button for over a minute and then put the batteries back in and it worked again. hope this helps
This is a problem with the cartridge not the console. The cartridges get dirty and then the console acts as if its broken because it can't read the cartridge. Pull the purple flap up so that you can see the inside of the cartridge and clean it with an alcohol based cleaning solution. Dry the cartridge fully before inserting it back into the console. I have done this for serveral games and they have worked again. A couple of games have just broken and refused to clean up. Hope this helps, let me know.
HI! Have a few ideas for you. First, are the batteries brand new never used good batteries? Also, are you sure they are in the correct way? If so, try to reset the system. Unplug all cords from the Vsmile. Then, for a full timed minute, press down BOTH buttons on the front of the console. After the minute, plug everything back in and try to power it up. Do you still have your receipt? You could try to echange it at the store. Vsmile is coming out with a newer slightly different handheld model you could try. Though, we have a vsmile for the home and a leapster as a handheld game. Which both of my children have loved. Have you tried calling Vtech about the problem? I've had to call before about the home unit and they were very helpful. (Incedently, I have had problems with that, so if you ever do here's a helpful tip: Reset the machine by unplugging EVERY cord and pressing the two front buttons together for one full timed minute! We were having problems with a power issue and this solved it) They may be just as helpful as Leapster's Leap Frog company and send you a replacement! Once on a long car trip my daughter got sick in the car, while playing, so needless to say the game system got it too. And when I called Vtech about what to do, they sent a replacement! Try calling Vtech and see. You never know! Good luck!! :)
You should definately call customer service! I had to do this with our vsmile and they were very helpful with tech issues immediately. You can call them at 1.800.521.2010. One thing to try, they had me do this on the home unit. Unplug everything, then hold down both buttons on the front for one full timed minute. This resets the unit. See if this works for you. They will ask you to do it on the phone first anyway. If not, I hope they are able to suggest other helpful solutions for you! If not, you can find a good deal on a new one on ebay. Good luck! I know how much the kids enjoy this unit!! :)
