Question about Hoover U5144900 / U5146900 / U5147900 Tempo Bagged Upright Vacuum

Overheating vacuum? My Hoover U5134-980 has worked fine for the past year. Lately, however, it has smelled like it is overheating to the point where I can no longer vacuum because of the smell. I opened it up and the belt had melted and become disfigured because the metal part that it attaches to became so hot. I opened it up further and found a large amount of lint on the filter near the light bulb and removed that. I also replaced the belt. Neither of these things has helped. It seems to work okay, but the smell is really awful and seems dangerous. Any ideas?

Re: Overheating vacuum?

If the belt had melted, the only cause can be the brush roll stiff to turn. remove belt and check bbrush roll turns freely

How can I get my DC26 working?!

They can cut out due to overheating. Although you say you have 'cleared' the filters, they should ideally be washed as they can clog with very fine dust and cause overheating due to lack of air flow. Once a machine cuts out due to overheating it can take maybe half an hour (or longer) to cool down enough to work again.

I have a new hoover steamvac spin scrub. This was the third time I used it in the past ten days. I changed the water and added cleaning solution and when I turned it on it made a weird sound and died. ...

It sounds as if this machine has a defective motor. Usually a bad motor will fail quickly. You should have a 1 year warranty, so I suggest looking on Hoover's website for an authorized service center.

Vac runs for about 15 mins. then stops

The unit is not getting the proper airflow and the motor is overheating to shut down.

You should check/clean out the filter in the dirt chamber there. If the filter is more than 1 year old, you should replace the filter.

I have two older Filter Queen (brown vacuum cleaners). Besides unclogging the hose area and making sure it is not filled with dirt, what else would cause the machine to run hot and have a high pitched...

High pitched sound is often caused by air leaks in air ducts. This will also cause hoover loosing sucking power and slightly overheating.

If the hoover is overheating a lot, then noise can also come from the motor. In that case the part must be rplaced.

Try replacing the cone filter, the secondary filter, and the insulation at the top of the machine.
If that does not fix the problem, then the hoover must be taken apart to clean or repair the air duct.

It sounds like it is overheating because of a blocked flow of air that keeps the motor cool. Check for a blockage from the area of the
roller brush through the hose to where it goes into the bag.

Dyson dc07 works for a bit then switches off all the time

If you used a credit card with extended warranty or its within 1 year, take it back. You are correct about the overheating. We have the same unit and it works fine for over 3 years. I did see rebuilds at Big Lots which worried me for a $500 vacuum to have a reliability problem. Guess the recycled vacuums had bad motors?

No suction

Sounds like your motor bearings are going bad. This is generally indicated by the motor overheating, and the heat transferring out through the motor pulley, which is where the belt attaches. So, your machine is overheating, melting the belt, and then tripping the thermal cutout. When it cools and you restart it, the belt is no longer functioning due to being melted, and this would make it not pick up on carpet. If you look at the motor pulley and it is turning blue: this is indicative of overheating.
The other possibility is that there is a clog, which is also causing your motor to overheat; so before you throw it away make sure all of your air pathways are clear.
The fact that you've had it 8 years is somewhat remarkable, however, since most vacuums of this type are averaging a 3-5 year lifespan. (And half that for bagless.)
So, check for clogs, and if it's not clogged, you're probably due for a new machine.

Hoover U5344-950

Is it a rubber smell or an electrical smell, If it is a rubber type smell then maybe the belt or brushroll has a problem. If is a electrical smell, then would be coming from the motor. How long have you had this? Hoover has a one year warranty, so if it less then a year, take to a shop that does Hoover Warranty. You can call theur 1-800 number and they can tell you where you can take it. The number is on the metal tag where the model number is.
