Panasonic Viera TV switiching itself off

My Panasonic Viera TV - Model TH-42PV30 keeps switching itself off. A red light next to the on/off switch blinks 5 times continuously with a opause between each sequence of 5 blinks. While this is happening the remote does not work. I switch off at the wall, and switch on again 30 min later, but it only stays on for around 5 min and switches off again with the 5 blinking lights. Any solution? Thanks, Mike

The TV I am having the trouble with is NOT a "projection" TV (as indicated in your reply to me) It is a Progressive Plasma TV - Model No. TH-37PA30. Panasonic Viera. Thanks, Mike

Thank you. The TV has since righted itself without any action, however your advice will come in handy if the problem occurs again. Mike

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the "switching itself off" would be a reaction as the unit has kicked into protective mode. The built-in diagnostic has sensed the fault, auto shutdown and displayed the error codes (5 blinks). 5 blinks would indicate possible fault in the:

  • loss of +5VDC at the SOS D board; or
  • SW PC Board P/N TNPA2841AH.
This of course would require opening the unit, perform voltage measurements, determine faulty component and subsequent part(s) replacement. Further, a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron would be required. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings.Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional or claim warranty if the unit is new.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Check the 2 main interconnection cables (24pin and 26pin) rear of PDP and Tuner box.
Make sure they are firmly connected. (Loose connection of 24pin will cause no power
on symptom.)

"Technically speaking, this is part of a protection circuit that shuts down the PDP if any of the working voltages dip below 75% of their nominal value.
This particular problem is due to the shutdown circuit being too anxious to do its job.

The 5 blinks on this model and chassis would be due to a defective "D board". The 5 volts are not working properly causing the TV not to turn ON.
I would suggest to contact Panasonic to see if they can provide you with the board to fix your plasma or if the plasma is less then a year old, still under manufacturers warranty.

The power light keeps flashing and the tv won't turn on. If you unplug for a minute and hit the power button it sound like it is coming on then it shuts off and the red power light flashes slowly. The TV is a Panisonic 1080i HDTV, about 6-7 years old.

Plasma tv screen goes black once you turn it on. Only sound

I have a panasonic TH-42PX60U plasma TV. When I watch TV programing I have no problems, or with the DVD input. But if I switch to another input, be it video game (PS2) or vcr the screen sometimes goes black and the red power lcd light next to the power switch flashes. Holding the power button in for a few seconds will shut down the tv. Then I can turn it back on and it may operate normally again for a undetermined period of time, before the screen goes black again. This never happened when new. The tv is about 1 year old. Any ideas on this problem? Thanks Ernie
