Flickering screen The television starts flickering at the onset of power. It appears as though it's a ghostly picture , appearing the same on all channels and on all inputs. The sound is fine.

This was for a Viore PDP42V18HA plasma, not a big screen. I am not sure how I categorized it that way. It's more like an unclear signal. or interference.

This could be more than one thing interfering, wiggle the wires and make sure that the aerial is plugged in properly.

Then re-scan your channels and see what happens, at my house a light switch interferes with the antenna so check for different things in the house which might be interfering.

If your LCD TV or monitor has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it's a candidate for some new capacitors
- Flickering screen
- Screen image disappears after several seconds
- Dim screen
- Slow start
- Power LED on, but no picture
- Unusual colors and/or lines
The primary cause of LCD TV and monitor failure is caused by faulty capacitors. You can examine the capacitors in your LCD TV or monitor and actually see if they are bad.
If they appear bulged on top, then they need to be replaced.
New capacitors will solve a host of problems in LCD monitors and TV's and will extend the life of your monitor or TV by several years.
Check the cables, connectors and connections.
Take it to a repair shop.

Samsung HLP5085W DLP - lamp replaced about 7 months ago. I powered up TV and got strange colors with flickering picture. Turned unit off and triangle symbol appears with lamp showing - needs replacement....

Strange colors and flickering picture symptom shows problem with color wheel and/or dmd board.
Lamp is only light source in dlp tv and it has nothing with colors or picture flicker.
TV goes to protection mode because of some internal problem as mentioned above.
If you wish to repair tv by yourself then you should have service manual copy in hand and that can be downloaded from HERE for small fee.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

Turning on TV after power outage

Not sure what you mean by "older", but I assume it's a CRT display. It takes some time for a picture tube to come up from a completely cold start. It has to get all of those electrons hot enough to start flying around, and also build up a high voltage on the screen. You don't notice it in normal operation because the power button doesn't really turn everything off, but just puts the set in standby mode. Unplugging, though, lets everything cool off completely.

If you're talking real antiques, with tube-type amplifiers, then the warmup time could be even longer. I remember as a kid watching the blank screen for a couple of minutes before a picture appeared.

What you describe sounds like normal behavior for a CRT television. Not sure what's up with that flickering red light, though.
