Re: 1 red light flashing
The cause of E-74 with one red light Error might be overheating of your console
and for avoiding such error in future you need to put your machine at an open
space. Ensure that it is placed near the window or you can also make some
external arrangement for cooling of console such as cooling the machine through
a pedestal fan. But as your Xbox already have E74 with one red light Problem
which can be solved by only repairing it, no other alternative. Either you
can send your Xbox to Microsoft (Please note that microsoft is no longer
providing extended warranty for E74 with one red lightError) and wait for 3-4
weeks. If you don't want to wait for a month, you can also fix E74 with one red
light problem with the help of this DIY Video, the guide will explain step by
step approach to fix the problem. Choice is yours...........

Hi there James it seems to me like you have the yellow light of death, but don't worry this is something that can be fixed. You have two options here Option1 you can send the console to SONY for $150, they will send you a refurbished model oh and all data may be lost. The whole process usually takes about 4-6 weeks. Option 2You can fix the problem at home with a PS3 repair guide worth only $40 a 3rd of the cost of sony, the ps3 will be fixed within the next hour or 2. Hope this helps
When you say you completely dissasembled it i guess you mean EVERYTHING?
Well did you make sure you plugged the battery back in? and Made sure all connections were placed back?
If you took off the heatsink and fan from the chips then that is why it switched off!
You should have put new paste on if thats the case!
The PS3 seems it is shutting down to protect itself from overheating and burning the chips!
The baby scratch should be ok unless it has destroyed a copper track?
If you have a hard drive, clearing the cache might resolve the one red light error. Also, you can try to remove the hard drive and power on the Xbox 360 Console without the hard drive to see if the red light will still occur. If it doesn't appear it is the hard drive causing the error and needs replacement, if it does flash the red light still, it is a hardware failure in your Xbox already.
Yes this is the YLOD the (Yellow light of death) it happens when the GPU and the CPU overheat and you will need to fix this by stopping the heat build up, you can sned it in and they will fix it for you for $130.
you are right about replacing the thermal compound between the cpu/gpu and heat sync. the gpu and cpu may need to be refolowed also. another tip is dont over tighten the screws. Tip: keep your ps3 flat do not keep it standing. when it is standing and heats up the thermal compound can start to move away from the heat sync. Keeping it flat will help extend the life PS3 at least from the overheating issue.
it may be overheating depending on which 2 are flashing, which if its shutting itself down, im willing to bet thats what it is. make sure you've attached the heatsinks securely with the x clips and do yourself a favor and use some good thermal material like arctic silver. make sure the fan is securely plugged into the mainboard.
When you put the Disc drive back together, the mechanism probably did not go togther properly. You have to put it together with a disc in the drive. It is very hard to get the disc player to go back together properly I know. I needed three hands to do it. I done one. It took me several tries, but I finally got it. Another thing, since you have already disassembled your PS3 and need to do it again, go to Radio shack and get some Thermal heat transfer compound, Replace the compound between the heat sinks and processors. The original compound dries up after about a year and will kill your PS3 completely if you do not do this. Good luck,I know its not going to be easy.
