Question about Jenn-Air JED8430 Electric Cooktop

2 Answers

Wiring installation I am installing a downdraft cooktop, which has four wires connecting to the cooktop. The wires are green, red, black and white. The cooktop is 120/208V. The wiring from the breaker box is 120V and has black, white, and ground wires. I assume when connecting the wires that the green is connected to the ground, the white wires are connected to each other, and the black wires are connected to each other. If that is correct, where is the red wire connected to. Is it connected to the white or black wire? Thanks.

Re: Wiring installation

You do need a 208/240 volt supply from your service panel. The green is ground, white is nuetral, and the red and black should measure 120 volts each to ground or 240/208 between each other. It is normal for most breaker panels to supply 208/240 between adjacent insulators. If you are only getting 1/2 of that then the circuit breaker may not be straddling the insulator bar but be 1/2 notch out and both breaker pins contacting the same 110 supply.

Helping a friend install a new unit... he has 3 wires where we took out the old unit (the old unit had 4 wires) .. the (source) 3 wire is black, white & bare.... the old and new unit have black, red,...

I suspect on teh wiring from the house the black&white will be the hot wires and the bare will be ground/neutral

use a volt meter before connecting tonew cooktop and check for;
black/bare to have 120volts
white/bare to have 120volts

if that is what you find...connect new cooktop as such;

black to black
red to (house) white

(cooktop) white and green to bare

We have a Jenn air jed8430. It was installed but never supplied power to it or tested. We want to make sure the wires are right before powering it up. Black is with Black. Red is with Black with Red...

I just looked, and there is not a wiring diagram available on the web for this unit.

I am concerned about the black with red stripe to red.

Check to see if there is a wiring diagram somewhere on the unit (there wasn't one in the installation instruction or manual for this unit.). I believe the red wire on the house side goes to the black/black wire on the cooktop side (so I believe you are correct on your concern.).

House side green should be to the coiled silver cooktop side silver wire.

But the wiring diagram will confirm these things.

I think the black/red stripe is for the blower.

Cooktop wiring

usually black(120v) white (n) and red(120v) bare wire to ground, but if htat what yo got and your sure of incoming voltage, blabk to black , red to red, and white to white is loang as you 2 power legs are hooked to either power line, the bare goes to the nuetral/ground. thikn i mighta confused myself here, but theres no other way to wire it

JED8430BD Wiring

from supply
white, black - should be hot then ground

On cooktop
red, black - should be hot white - neutral then ground

If you have a volt meter measure
between white - black 220v
between white or black - ground 110

between red - black 220v
between red or black - ground or neutral 110

If the above is confirmed
red (cooktop) to white(supply)
black (cooktop) to black(supply)
white (cooktop) to ground(supply)
