Cursor stuck in MS Excel

When I open microsoft excel, running in windows xp on a pc, the cursor is stuck in the cell it happens to be in when the spreadsheet is opened. If the mouse is moved, without holding down either button, whatever area it passes over is highlighted, as if the left mouse button were pressed.

the behavior is seen only in Excel.

The arrow keys have the same effect as the mouse. Moving the right arrow key causes cells to be highlighted in the right direction, moving the down key causes the cells in the downward direction to be highlighted, etc...

I clarify comment about arrow keys : if I open excel, and do not click on the mouse mouse, arrow keys move cursor normally. The first instance of left-clicking the mouse anchors it. After that, arrow keys have no effect on the cursor box, and moving the mouse only highlights the moused-over range.

The version of excel is Excel 2003 (11.8231.8221) SP3

The arrow keys having that effect would indicate that a Shift key was stuck down. And the mouse having that effect would indicate that the left mouse button is stuck down as well. However, holding down Shift and moving the mouse, when everything is working properly, does not have that effect, so those two problems, while probably related, are not due to a hardware issue...

This will take some actual research to see if it's a function, what version of Excel do you have.

Do the arrow keys move the cursor around the sheet?

Is the mouse behaving like this with any other programs? i.e. in internet explorer, does moving the mouse highlight a bunch of text?

Tools menu.
Edit tab.
Enable the check boxes for "Edit directly in cell" and "Allow cell drag and drop"

This might have happened if you had opened up a excel with macros enabled!

Lost or forgot Word password with which you can acquire the documents or information stored in the Word file is clearly tricky. You can try Word Password Recovery to recover the lost Word password. This would be helpful.
With this practical tool, you can recover and get access to any password-protected Word document at ease. And here is guide for you:
1. Click Open and select the file.
2. Choose one of the attack types to recover Word password.
3. Attack settings.
4. Click Start on the taskbar until the operation is finished.
5. Click OK, and you will find the password in the box. If you still haven't mastered the guide to recover lost Word password, you can click here as the reference.

Found possible solution, not a function of Excel, but one of Windows.

  1. Go to the "Control Panel" and open the "Mouse" Properties.
  2. On the "Buttons" tab (should be the first tab) the bottom section should be "ClickLock."
  3. Uncheck "Turn on ClickLock."
ClickLock "Enables you to highlight or drag without holding down the mouse button. To set, briefly press the mouse button. To release, click the mouse button again."
