There is currenlty a class action suit against these tv's as this problem commonly occurs from a bulb dripping onto the board and the sound stops working it is around $500 for a repair man to fix.

Sound won't come on
make sure the TV is not looking for a digital sound source, should be in sound menu. Older TV's had a switch in the back for internal/external speakers.
