    I moved the unit to plug in a cable into the back. Now when I turn it on it shows the message, "F61" for a second, makes a loud static sound and then shuts off.

    I notice that when I push the power cable into the unit while turning it on and then ever so slowly remove my hand, sometimes it will stay on for a few minutes.

the F-61 code means your audio outputs are bad you must have it repaired

F 61 Code

The if the "bad sound" is coming from the speaker(s) it probably needs the output ic. If it is coming from the player itself check that the fans are working. F61 is an amp error code but a non-rotating or unplugged fan will also set it off.

Panasonic sa ht990 fault 61

This a memory problem ,try to look for the reset button and press it . If you can't find the reset button then the other option is unplug the unit for 24 hours the purpose is to dessipate or drain the charged current .

Hope it may help you;
