The same problem and Gateway did not post a driver for the DVD RW Rom. I have searched and searched for the driver, Sony acts like it never heard of the deivce. I physically removed the drive from the laptop and reinstalled it, the bios saw it, Windows saw it also, but just did not install it correctly. Help would like to keep it in my laptop, but is currently going through the drives at work to see if any are compatible with my laptop that I can put my cover on it.

The same Optiarc drive in a Gateway laptop.  Driver cannot be started.  I have seen several questions, but no answers.

Uninstalling the device and rebooting did not work.

I just had the same problem (Windows XP)... here's what I did to fix it:
- Open Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
- Delete "Secondary IDE Channel"
- Reboot
- After reboot, I got a the new hardware found dialog for the Opticarc. Just ignore it (hit cancel)
- The next New Hardware Found dialog box was for the Secondary IDE Channel. Just use the existing driver.
- Let it finish, then reboot.

The really weird thing is that I used Acronis to image the drive and restored the image onto another (exactly identical) laptop using Universal Restore and _still_ had this issue. Odd. But at least it's fixed now.

Good luck!

I was having this same problem. Mine now works! Go to gateway support, register your computer if you have not done so already--you will need your date of purchase, place of purchase, and serial #.
use online chat. allow them to share control of mouse--they were able to resolve the problem in about 3 minutes!

Try uninstalling the drive and reboot. Usually Windows will reinstall the drive which fixes the propblem. If you are still getting error 10 after you reinstall then it is either a problem with the drive cable or drive itself. Hope this helps.

Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170a ata device. Cannot start code 10 error? any ideas why.

Possible cause of the problem:

1. Error 10 means that the drive driver is not properly or not installed in your computer.
2. You drive is broken.

Solutions:
1. Replug your drive wiring's inside the computer casing.
2. Check in the Device Manager in your computer if there is conflict in your drive. Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager to do this.

Windows vista updated and now my optiarc dvd rw drive won't work

You will have to uninstall the drive and reinstall again. I think the drivers for the drive is not properly installed. But if all this does not work, then I think you will have to do a system restore.

Best wishes

If the drivers have been updated recently, go to the properties page for the device and click on the Rollback drivers button. Reboot the machine and try using the drive again. If that does not work, you can go into Device Manager, right-click on the drive and select uninstall. Reboot the machine and it should re-detect the drive and reinstall the proper drivers.

It seems to be a common problem on the gateway systems. To correct this you need to go into your Registry Editor. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} When you click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} look in the right side box. You should see an entry labeled UpperFilter delete this entry. You may also have a LowerFilter if so delete this as well. Exit Regedit and reboot. This solved the problem for me.

iTunes can no longer find my CD burner. Using a gatewayM-1631U laptop, with windows 7 x 64 home premium edition. (See additional details below). I use iTunes regularly, and as recently as Xmas 2009 was burning music CDs frequently on my laptop. Yesterday I attempted to burn a CD, and iTunes no longer recognizes the installed CD burner. I have not installed any programs to my computer recently, or made any other changes. Today I began investigating the issue. I have tried (not in order) the following - and have not solved the issue: 1. Going to the registry editor and deleting the lower and upper filters associated with the H_KEY_LOCAL MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENT CONTROL SET/CONTROL/CLASS 4DE3695 .... 2. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes (9.0.2.25) 3. Repair iTunes 9.0.2.25 4. Looked for updates for the drivers (can't find any) 5. Downloading Gearsoft products I admit that I have not tried Windows Media Player (because I'm committed to my iTunes - I sync with my ipod all the time and listen to it alot). I also realize I may have made the problem worse by some of my attempted fixes. Here is the information gathered through itunes diagnostics: Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Home Premium Edition (Build 7600) Gateway M-1631U iTunes 9.0.2.25 QuickTime 7.6.5 FairPlay 1.5.23 Apple Application Support 1.1.0 iPod Updater Library 9.0d11 CD Driver 2.2.0.1 CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1 Apple Mobile Device 2.6.0.32 Apple Mobile Device Driver not found. Bonjour 1.0.6.2 (118.5) iTunes Serial Number 2987488CE609EDAB Current user is not an administrator. The current local date and time is 2010-02-05 07:50:22. iTunes is not running in safe mode. Video Display Information ATI Technologies Inc., ATI Radeon X1200 Series **** External Plug-ins Information **** No external plug-ins installed. iPodService 9.0.2.25 is currently running. iTunesHelper 9.0.2.25 is currently running. Apple Mobile Device service 2.50.39.0 is currently running. **** CD/DVD Drive Tests **** No drivers in LowerFilters. UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.2.0.1), Failed while scanning for CD / DVD drives, error 2380. Error while opening iTunes CD driver. This could be caused by a corrupted iTunes file or a conflict with other older CD burning applications, either currently installed or previously installed and uninstalled incorrectly. Additionally, the device driver says my DVD/CD unit is: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7563A ATA Device Anything else you need to help me figure this out? Could really use help and advice. Thanks in advance.
