The button to turn on was taking a few pushed to turn on. Once it started all was ok. It finally just stoped turning on. There is a yellow/orange light blinking on the buttin but nothing turns on. Once it turns on if I don't shut it off it is fine forever so I am thinking it might be the on/off button but not sure. Anyway, to hotwire these computers if the switch is not working?
Hi try taking the front face panel off first and see what is obstructing the button and put the panel back on again. If you dont know what to look for behind the panel then its better to take it to a repair shop.

CNETAug 5, 2009 - My dell dimension 4500 was accidentally turned off at the power strip and ... There is a light behind the button but no lights on back of computer. ... I have a Dimension 2400 that I'm not using--could I try that power supply in it?
You will have to get your power button unstuck. I do not know what type of button you have but if you would like to at least get your PC on without it instantly turning off, you can remove the power switch connector from the motherboard. You will eventually need to have the switch unstuck, or replaced though.
It's one of two problems: bad power supply, or bad motherboard. If you are electro-mech inclined, remove the power supply. Take it to your local computer repair shop, and ask for one just like that one. Reinstall, power up should (most of the time) fix this problem. If still no power, you need a new mb. Return to the shop, ask them to replace mb. This repair should be right around $250.0 - tops. Any more than that - replace computer. Hope this helps. Either way, if you wouldn't mind taking the time to rate my response, it would be much appreciated! Thanx and good luck.
Normally, when the Dimension L-series gives a Press DEL to continue, it is an indication that the Hard Drive (Where data is stored) is failing.
At the Dell Screen when the system is 1st turned on, press CNTL+ALT+D to run a quick diagnostic on the hard drive. If there is a failure, you will get a failure code (Code 3, Code 4 etc) if the drive passes, no failure was detected (Doesn't mean one doesn't exists though)
To run more diagnostics, you can boot to the Dell Dimension Resource CD if you have it and run Dell Diagnostics from the CD.
