Question about Acer Aspire 3000 Notebook
The laptop hit the floor hard. turned laptop on. got to acer splash screen. froze. turned off(held power button for 4 seconds). turned on again.. black screen. only visible on is power button. turned off and on and got random results up to and including: see desktop goto start menu. Locks up. get as far as screen asking how to startup(normal, safemode) locks up. choose safe mode. locks up. 5 times in a row black screen only. wait 5 min while typing this message, get to acer splash screen, choose start windows manually, get to windows splash screen, scandisk, 86 percent completed...... locked up.... can't even use the fn keys to make screen go dim..... The only consistent symptom is that after it locks up, it continues to lock up for every reset unless I let it sit for a bit............ fan cooling on startup
It definetly soundas like Hard Drive failure as previosly said. the hard drives are inexpensive so just look for a 2.5" hdd and away you go.

Theres a good chance that the hard drive platletes and parking head have been damaged, although this is not a huge problem to replace, as long as your screen is working ok, then it is worth replacing. you can access it on the underside of the casing, in the largest compartment, remove all screws and the hard drive will be held in with more screws.

Click "Restart" in the "Turn Off Computer" dialog box to reboot your computer.
Watch your computer's reboot display closely. Press "F2" when you see the system keys display at the bottom of the screen, just before the Windows splash screen appears, to access the BIOS panel.
