Question about Pentax Optio T20 Digital Camera

Lens opens, makes strange noise, closes

When you turn on the camera the lens opens makes the startup sound then it makes a strange noise and then it makes two beeps and the lens closes
i can view pictures when its plugged into my computer  but i cant make it go into picture mode or video modeI purchased two Pentax Optio T20 cameras from Costco less than two years ago. They both now fail to complete starting. It seems ironic that they both failed with the same start-up problems at the same time?? They both start, the lens opens, then closes with two beeps-what could cause this - and both failed together !! I sent one back to Pentax and they told me it would be $149 to fix each camera by replacing circuit boards. I think they just sent me a form letter. I don't think they opened the camera and checked out the specific problem.

I have 2 Optio T20 digital cameras purchased at the same time about 1 1/2 years ago. Both of them failed at the same time about several weeks ago. The batteries are charged and good. When they start, the green light comes on, the lens activates out, then immediately beeps sound and the lens closes and the cdamera goes off. How ironic that two cameras would have the same symtoms at the same time !! Can it be in the programing or what else ?

It is lens mechanism problem and mostly loading gears in lens worn out / exhausted. Complete lens assembly replacement is only solution but cost would be high.
Below is image of lens mechanism showing how is loading gear just for reference...

First buy new alkaline batteries and test them, if you put defective batteries on both cameras , that is a possible reason.

Regarding the firmware, there is no known time bomb case, and normally cameras without updates do not have this problem. I am sure that factory customer support will tell you the same. I would rule out this option.

The more likely is a short or a fault inside the camera , when the camera starts up, detects the problem and shut down. this problems are often originated on circuit board, or because of a short to chassy, faulty switch shorting etc.
Also still possible a lens error , but in that case you usually get error message.

A last possibility is that cameras had been exposed to same conditions , and this had damaged both of them.

For example if both camera had been exposed to wet weather, they may have developed oxide formation roughly at the same time, this caused the short and fried both camera.

In any case this is an hardware fault, and the cameras must be taken apart to fix them, even if you do not have to replace the main board.

Find a local repairman and ask a quote for the repair.

Hi
Check the CF connector in the camera. One of the pins might be bent..

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, lets try the basic, battery. Not only ensure fresh, fully charge batteries but clean/scrape the battery contacts. Corrosion may have developed and thus can cause low battery input to the camera circuitry. In some instances, it may even be necessary to bend/stretch these contact pins/points to provide more pressure to the batteries themselves.

I am also inclined to suspect sand, dirt or dust has entered the lens mechanism and partially block lens movement at some point. Being an intricate mechanical problem, the correct procedure would be to seek the services of qualified professionals. However, a possible workaround would be to jar the camera lens into full action by thumping the camera base against the pal of one's hand or even an open book. This of course is not a sound technical solution and may even worsen the condition.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

Have you tried the memory cards in other cameras or PCs? sounds as if your cards are corrupt and need re-formatting.

It's not worth it. After a camera is dropped, it will develop other problems which are currently unnoticeable - just like an automobile after a major collision.

It is making a constant strange noise when it is turned on. does it mean it is broken?

Not necessarily.
This camera has an auto lens. Which means it will focus automatically every second, which makes this clicking sound. You can turn this option off:
1: Go into the menu
2: Chose option Cam Settings
3: Switch AUTO focus to single lens and click OK.

FE-280 Lens Blurry Photos and no zoom turns off

You have a bad lens. Unless the camera is in warranty the cost of repairing the lens is higher than the value of your camera. The strange noise you hear is the lens motor trying to move the lens. One solution is to blow compressed air around the lens. Sometimes dust and dirt may jam the lens.

Pentax Optio A10 Camera Lens won't retract

It sounds like you may have a bad lens assembly. If it is sticking open or closed, it will usually make a buzzing noise. If it fails to open or close all the way, it will turn itself back off. This is what it sounds like you are saying. I can fix this for $40, or you can send it to Pentax in Arizona. I don't know what they charge for a lens assembly, but the minimum charge for this camera seems to be about $90. If you just want to get rid of this camera, I also buy all Pentax Option a10, a20, a30, a40 cameras.

Coolpix lens opens retracts opens then closes again and lens error appears

Hello

When you turn the camera on the lens comes out and has parameters when extending to focus, if the lens does not open fully it sees a problem and then closes.

there are tiny plastic gears inside and may have chipped or a piece of sand got in causing the lens to jamb. "very fragile"

one solution is to ask a camera repair shop how much a lens mechanism would be to replace. (if cost is more than 1/2 of what you paid dont bother)

another solution is to have someone sell your camera on an auction site for parts, to make some money towards another camera purchase

Canon powershot s410 problem

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.

Shutter problem

sand in the mechanism? Or other kind of wearout... If the lens cover does not open completely due to some mechanical problem, the camera will not work (there are switches to detect cover full open and full closed). Probably needs some repair, cleaning or replacing the cover gears
