Emachine won't start up

It doesn't respond at all. I've checked the connections, and surge protector is working. What could possibly cause this?

Most likely it is the power supply has failed, which is a common problem with PCs. That is the box that the power cable plugs in to. You can get one for around $20 or so online and swap it out by removing the four screws that hold it into place and unplugging all the connections that it plugs into on the inside of the case.

Thanks and please take a moment to give this a good rating of fixya.

We have a telephone handset and base the Gigaset A265 which is not ringing in the house but going straight to our message system on our computer via our internet provider orange. We can call out but are...

Hello.

Reset the phone:

Unplug the battery in the handset, unplug the phone line from the base and unplug the electricity from the base. Leave everything unplugged for an hour or two instead of a couple to five minutes. That way you can get more of an idea of whether your phone will work. After an hour or two plug in everything. If resetting the phone doesn't work then try the next step.

Check the surge protector:

Is the phone line plugged into a surge protector? The surge protector may have stopped working or blown a surge, a sudden burst of electricity, which may have caused the dial tone in your cordless phone to go. Unplug the phone line from the surge protector then plug it back in and see if you get a dial tone. It could be that the phone line plugged into the surge was loose or not plugged in securely.

Try a different phone plug, outlet.

Check the base:

Is the base dusty and have possible dirt in the prongs where the phone sits? Lift the base and blow off dust.

Check the handset for dirt.

Rub metal connections on handset and base:

Use a pen cap or coin and rub the metal connections on the bottom of the handset. Rub the prongs, metal connections on base.

Hope these suggestions help.

Lookbook will not power on

A computer that won't start can be both alarming and infuriating, especially if you're on a deadline or you haven't been backing up all your data (like we all tend to do). Don't panic, though-this problem often has a simple solution.

1.If your desktop computer does nothing at all when you try to start it, first check that the power cable is securely plugged in at the back of the computer as well as into a working power outlet. It's amazing how often this is the case.
2.If you're starting from a button on the keyboard, make sure the keyboard is connected to the computer.
3.If the computer is plugged into a surge protector, see if the surge protector has a reset switch that you can push. (If it doesn't have a reset switch and the problem is with the surge protector, it will need to be replaced.) Try plugging a lamp or other device into one of the surge protector's outlets to make sure it's working.
4.If you can hear the computer's fan or hard-disk drive, or if you can see indicator lights on the main unit but the monitor stays dark, make sure that the monitor is connected to a working power source, that it's turned on and that it's securely connected to the computer via the video cable.
5.If the monitor and computer have power but the computer displays a "Non-system disk or disk error" message, check to make sure you didn't leave a disk in the A: drive. If you did, eject it and restart the computer.
6.If the operating system still won't start even though the computer and monitor have power, try restarting with a Windows CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive or, if you've got a Macintosh, with a Mac OS disc in the CD-ROM drive. (You can start a Mac from the CDROM drive by holding down the C key while starting up.)
7.If the operating system then starts, your problem is probably with the startup hard drive or with the operating system installed on it. If you can't fix the drive, you'll have to replace it. (See also How to Fix Bad Sectors on a Hard Disk and How to Recover Lost Files.)

You can check it here as well:
The minute your computer's hard disk starts to act flaky, make sure you have an up-to-date backup. Then you can do some simple diagnostics and repairs. Both Windows and Mac OS come with built-in hard-disk utility software that scans your hard disk for errors and attempts to fix them.

1. Double-click on My Computer to open the My Computer window.
2. Select the disk that you want to diagnose and repair.
3. Choose Properties from the File menu. You should see the Properties window for the drive that you selected.
4. Choose the Tools tab.
5. Click the Check Now button under Error Checking Status.
6. Depending on your version of Windows, choose either "Thorough" or "Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors."

7. Click on Start.

After a bad lightening storm, our Intermatic HB88RC timer is stuck on zeros and won't budge for setting the clock or programs. Is there a way to reset it and start over? We've unplugged it for a...

Open following link to identify timer, download manual and see replacement product for discontinued HB88
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html#hb88

Electronic timers are susceptible to power surge, even nearby surge that gets picked up by household wires or internal timer parts. All wires carry current when exposed to nearby current. Same principle when cell-phone recharge transformer converts 120V to lower volts-amps without wires directly connected.

HB88 timer is reset by removing/replacing AA battery.
If reset does not restore functionality, then timer has gone bad.

Whole house surge protector can protect circuit breakers and electronics that are not connected to typical power-strip surge protector. For example HVAC unit and electronic water heater controls are not protected from surge. Household items that are connected to co-ax cable also need separate protection.

Do you have the Blu Ray player plugged into a surge protector, sometimes surge protectors can cause odd feedback in certain electronics and cause them to be buggy. If this is the case, take it off the surge protector and plug it straight into the wall and see if that fixes the problem. If this isn't the case or doesn't solve the problem there could be a number of reasons this is happening, there could have been a surge that fried some internal components causing the player to not function correctly, or it could have just had a hardware malfunction. If this doesn't help I would recommend calling the manufacturer of the player to see if they can provide you with additional info

My Belkin F5D8236-4 v3 Router won't turn on. We had a storm last night and the power went out but the router won't turn on. I have tried to plug it into different outlets to see if that would work...

Try resetting the router. There should be a little hole somewhere on it with a button inside that you can press with a paperclip. Try holding that button down while you unplug then plug the router in while holding it (if possible). If that doesn't work, I'd suspect the storm might've damaged the router somehow. Was it plugged into a surge protector, and/or have you noticed any other issues with anything else that was turned on at the time?

Please check if your surge protector is working properly now. There is possibility that the surge protector is blown off due to high voltage surge. Check if your surge protector has a reset switch which some of the surge protectors have. If the problem still persists then you have to call the technician to replace the safety fuse which is inside the TV. The cost will not be much. I will personally recommend that you change your TV as it has outlived its life being 10 yrs old.

Emachine with XP home edition doesn't start

Hi hearalso, down to the basic's. Replace power cord.
No help there than, remove the case's side panel to expose the motherboard. (Normally it is the left side panel while facing the front of the PC.)
Look closely for a small (green in color) led light. The power cord must be connected to the PC & connected to you're power strip but do not press the power on button on the PC.
The green led tell's you the board is receiving 5volts. Check all connections. Un-plug & reconnect every data & power connector in your PC. (Double check). There is a fuse inside your power supply that may have blown. Check you're manual page, Approva Statements B-1. Fuse Warning Instruction Caution.
Check fuse in power supply. (Unplug power cord before opening).
If you can not power up the PC after all of the above than if possible, swap out the power supply.
Replacing the power supply is the last step.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
Good Luck!

Mike
