Why does my upright freezer runs then kicks off, runs then kicks off?

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand your Frigidaire freezer runs for a short time and then kicks off. Then it turns on with a click and repeats its cycle. This is how your freezer functions. When it needs to cool, the compressor will kick on and cool until the temperature is reached. Then it will kick off until it needs to cool again. It's possibly due to the hot and humid summer that it is cycling on and of more. I hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Defrost cycles

Defrost cycle usually comes on after about 7 hours. If it is happening every 30 minutes or so, the defrost timer is not working properly and your internal temperature will never have a chance to go down to zero as SOP.

When defrost cycle comes on, the compressor is automatically shut off and internal freezer temps can go up by close to 25 degrees or more. It is for this reason that commercial freezers do not have auto defrost - the latter extols a price, convenience at the price of higher average temps and less time to properly store foodstuffs in freezer.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Amana freezer has run well for 40yrs. Had weather related power outage for 6 days. Now freezer won't run. Is using about 125 watts, compressor is hot, pressing ear to cabinet reveals "something" is going...

Hi,
What often happens in an outage like that is you get a rapid on/off cycle about three times or so... This puts extra stress on the compressor because the pressures do not have time to equalize before the compressor tries ot restart. Considering th age of your compressor either that or a low voltage situation was the final straw for your compressor and it died...
The best you can do at this point would be to allow the compressor to completely cool, as in unplug it for 12 or more hours, then try to plug it back in to restart it, it sometimes works...

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Delfield Mdl.6151 freezer

If the thermostat will let you set that high of a temp, you probably could use it. Let me give you a few things to think about. At higher temps, the refrigerant pressures could cause the compressor to work harder which would shorten the life. The unit will also have shorter run cycles which could over work the compressor. Shorter run times will affect the humidity of the conditioned space. Bad thing if you have fruits and veggies in there. You will have to eliminate the defrost cycles. No need to have "Forced" defrost at cooler temps. I am not a big fan of using equipment for things other than what it was designed for. So, you can try it and keep an eye on how it performs. Good luck and hope this is of some help.

when its running how hot are the sides the starting amps are too high and 1.5 running amps ain't bad now the the cut in cut out are too high if you look on the dial that the mid point settings that's where you should have it not on 1 1 is hot set it on the straight line that's where you should do all your testing colder settings go up not down you could be overheating the compressor by making it come on too quick the freezer should be about -10 or so do you see any gaps in the gasket
