Re: disc not spinning
please check the model of the optical unit and purchase the new (original) one. Then you can change the optical taking care that mechanical alignment should stay the same as before replacement.
Hope that this will solve your problem.

Disc read errors are mainly due to weak or dirty lens you should try cleaning lens first. When your PS2 lens is covered by dust it wont allow laser to read disc so its better to clean your PS2 lens first,if problem still exists then your PS2 lens is weak and you will have to take it to Sony repairer for service.I recommend all of PS2 owners to keep their PS2 at dust free environment.
Watch this video it will help you to learn how to clean your PS2,its easy you can do it at home. Wish you good luck and hope cleaning lens will solve your problem. Thank you!
Your lazer lense has bit the dust. Depending on your model type the first gen systems lazers are very easy to replace. The later versions sony made it harder to replace. You can find out what model you have by looking at the back of your PS2 then you can either call sony or go to there website and find out what generation PS2 you have. Then go from there. Hope this helps
Test to see if the PS2 will read any Discs it is supposed to read. Try CD, CDR, PS1, PS2 Blue, PS2 silver, DVD. It might read something.
To repair open the case, and clean everything in sight. Dust is your enemy. ?When you get to the lens, Use a Q-tip lightly damped with Rubbing Alcohol to swab the lens clean. Then dry it. You may have to completely disassemble the PS2 all the way to get all the dust. I believe Dust is shorting out your disc drive spindle.
If your not comfortable with fully disassembling you playstation, Then go to
WWW.playstationclinic.com and they may do a Cleaning and Tuning for $20 plus shipping.
