The Core i technology will 'slap a Pentium around'
It's like comparing the 'grocery getter car' to a fuel dragster.

Core i3 and Core i5 technology has less 'processor power', than a comparable Core i7, but the Core i3, and Core i5 were also designed to use less power. Therefore (Supposedly) more battery life.

The Intel Pentium P6100 is a dual core processor. Two processor cores.

This is because it uses the old HT technology.

Instead of having two processor cores operating at 2.0GigaHertz, (Pentium P6100), you have FOUR processor cores operating at 2.66GHz.

Crude example?
Two men digging a ditch. Take them out, and replace with four men.
Which scenario will get the job done faster?

HOWEVER, surfing the internet? Watching a video?
Only 1 or 2 cores are going to kick in.
Playing an intensive game, or running an intensive program?
THEN all 4 cores kick in, and kick sum boot-y.

Please note that CPU upgrades in notebooks/laptops/netbooks are highly problematic because they depend on often uncertain motherboard specifications (different notebook models bearing the same series number in your question can have different internal and external specification and be based on different motherboards).

The most serious problem you face is that CPU upgrades in laptops/notebooks/netbooks inevitably require near complete disassembly and the correct reassembly of the computer. Inevitably, this type of work is best done by an experienced professional, trained for and capable of performing a warrantied repair. Understandably, the associated labor costs will be on the high side.

Also, upgrading the CPU requires the user to first risk expenditure on an item that cannot be returned to the seller or supplier if later found to be incompatible but could still be a potentially expensive replacement product, without being absolutely certain that is compatible with the motherboard for which it is intended.

So you will need to do extensive research on the specification of the precise motherboard of the precise model of your notebook. To do this, you will need the full, long, specific model number plus also the Serial Number (S/N) and Part Number (P/N) of the computer that are usually printed on a label underneath the computer. From these, you should obtain the P/N of the motherboard, then navigate to the support and product information pages of the motherboard manufacturer's website to verify the CPU compatibility specifications of the motherboard and then proceed from there.

Will an Intel® Pentium® M


I don't know your exact CPU specs but I've taken a single core Intel M processor 2.0 GHZ from a Dell 800 laptop and put it into my wife's X1000 and have had no problems running XP SP3. My own x1000 computer reports Intel Pentium M 1600MHZ as CPU type.

Pentium 4 refers to the laptop processor.

Intel Pentium 4 is a family of high-performance microprocessors that succeeded Pentium III family. Pentium 4 CPUs are based on new NetBurst micro-architecture, which differed significantly from P6 micro-architecture used in Pentium II/Pentium III microprocessors. As an overall CPU performance is proportional to its frequency and its efficiency, to achieve better performance levels many micro-architectures, including P6, strike a delicate balance between faster CPU frequencies and improved efficiency. The NetBurst microarchitecture used different approach - it attempted to improve performance primarily by increasing CPU frequency, often at at the expense of efficiency. One of key elements in this approach was "Hyper-Pipelined Technology" - 20-stage pipeline (not counting decoder stages), that was significantly longer than in previous generation of Pentium processors.

The rest of the components in the laptop are used in many other laptops. For example hard drive, memory and graphics.

Tell if a cpu is for mobile use or desktop use


In general a mobile CPU is appended by the letter m. e.g. Intels new iCore series have desktop processors named ix-xxx whereas their mobile versions are labelled ix-xxxm.
The best way for you to check your CPU model would be to either visit the HP homepage, search for your specific model and view the spec. Or you could go into your start menu, select the Run box, then type 'dxdiag' without the quotes, and press ok. This will bring up hardware information for your machine. Sometimes the run box is disabled from the start menu.

I want to upgrade my hpdv1000 pentium M processor whats the maximum upgrade allowed for this? i have upgraded it to 2gb ram from 512mb and 250gb hd from 60gb and its doin fine.


You should be able to upgrade the CPU, since it seems that the DV1000's motherboard uses a socket CPU design. But, obviously, HP would rather have you choose the CPU that you want from the beginning and stick with it.
The first thing to do is to check HP website to see what other configurations were/are sold for your model. If they sell it with faster CPUs then you can upgrade to one of them...

PLEASE NOTE:
In order for a particular processor to be compatible with a particular laptop:
(1) the processor must be physically compatible with the laptop socket, in your case I thing you have a Soket 479 processor
(2) the laptop chipset must support the processor.
(3) the chipset front side bus speed must match the processor front side bus speed, in your case 400Mhz.
(4) the laptop BIOS must support the processor.

So I listed here processors with FSB at 400Mhz, I gues that DV1000 as a 855GM Motherboard that supports only 400Mhz with Socket 479
