No... dll's usually get corrupted by viruses or malware. Unfortunately, if you are talking about online games though, they tend to be targeted by those same virus and malware creators thereby indirectly the games might be the cause of the corruption. For example, the Facebook games websites are constantly being targeted by virus and malware makers and we literally see hundreds of people from there every week that have serious infestations which cause problems like corruped dll's. Just arm yourself with an arsenal of FREE anti-malware programs and a good anti-virus program and you will be ok.

SOURCE: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll is corrupt or missing

See if you can get into safe mode. If you can't then your system files are corrupted and you'll have to restore your computer back to factory defaults.

I believe on your compaq presario they have a built in factory restore and its either accessed by the F10 or F11 key when you first turn on the computer. You'll know when you first turn on the computer at the compaq logo screen.

Let me know if I can help you further.

SOURCE: "<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

  1. Verify the boot.ini file is found on the computer by using a boot diskette or use your Windows CD to get to the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt.
  2. From this prompt edit the boot.ini, verify that it is pointing to the correct operating system, and that no anomalies are found within the file. Below is a listing of what to verify
  • If only one operating system is on the computer verify that the boot.ini only has one operating system listed. In some situations an alternate configuration line may be added for the same operating system, leaving the improper line.
  • Verify that the "default=" line as well as the operating system line are the same and that they are pointing to the correct operating system.
Verify that the computer has the hal.dll file

From the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt quickly determine if your computer has the "hal.dll" file by typing "dir hal.dll /s" at the prompt. If the computer returns a "File not found" message, the hal.dll has been deleted.

To recover this file boot the Windows operating system CD and choose the option to "Restore", "Repair", or "Recover." This option will prompt you for the Windows installation to use, the administrators password and will allow you to restore the proper file. At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.

expand C:\i386\hal.dl_ D:\windows\system32\

In the above example "D" would be the letter of your CD-ROM drive and "C" the letter of the drive your operating system is installed on. For example, your disc drive may be D: and your hard drive is likely C:.

I have just puchussed sims 2 for pc and was not told it wont play on windows vista, it keeps telling me i can download a program to play it. Not sure which 1.

When I tried to install The Sims 2 on my pc while using Windows Vista I had a problem. When the installation reached 1% a message appeared saying: "A problem occured when trying to transfer the file 'F:/Support/es/Leeme.txt' from the media. Do you want to retry to copy the file,or cancel the installation?" and the installation couldn't go on because you had only 2 choices, retry or cancel. The problem actually is with the name of the file. In the cd/dvd the file has the name 'Leã©me.txt' but in the installation the file has the name 'Leeme.txt'. What you really have to do is:
1.Open 'My Computer'
2.Right-click on the cd/dvd drive with the game in it and hit Open
3.Copy all the files of the game 4.Go to desktop, right-click and hit New<Folder.Rename the folder Disk 1
5.Paste the files of the game inside the folder
6.Go to Support<es and rename the file 'Leã©me' into 'Leeme'
7.Go to Support<sv and rename the file 'lã¤smig' into 'lasmig'
8.Remove the cd/dvd from the drive
9.Start the installation from Disk 1<AutoRun.exe
The installation should now work properly until the end.
But when you try to run the game a message will appear saying 'This program has known compatibility issues'. Click check for solutions online and then follow the link that appears. This link provides you with a patch for the game!
Hope this information was helpful! Enjoy! icon_biggrin.gif

It keeps telling me a file is corrupted. ive restarted & everything but every time i turn back on the message pops up. Do u know what i can do?

If you get a corrupted file, there really is not anything you can do. Corrupted files are generally caused by somehow forcing a process to stop while it's writing to a file, and that file becomes corrupted. For example, if I am playing a game and I try to save, but then get bored of waiting and turn off the console while it's still saving, the file will become corrupted and unusable.

Don't fall for online scams of tools trying to recover corrupted files, there is really no way to save a file that's been corrupted. You should just delete the file and move on. If it's DLC you can redownload it, if it's a game save you can work your way back.
