Marantz Error Code "SUM1" SR8000 Receiver

Just in time for the holidays! The receiver will normally work properly for a few minutes, then the audio shuts off and the display flashes "ERROR SUM 1." How many years should you expect from a receiver like this anyway? Has anyone out there run into this problem?

SOURCE: What does this Error Message mean?

hello AuburnCE, After 4 years of joy my Marantz SR8200 receiver also shows this message from time to time - after 1h of operation or so. Then it is hanging (like a PC ;o). Taking it of from the electricity network for a moment resolves the problem until the next POW 05 hang usually a fiew days later. I brought the receiver to an authorized Marantz maintenance and repair center twice now and they were not able to reproduce the error. They said this has directly or indirectly to do with the power supply unit. They also called marantz. For me it appears that this is not an internal receiver problem IN MY CASE. I think I there might be a relationship to zapping on my Topfield SAT receiver via power supply network as the connection is optical. Or my dimmerunit for the light. Unfortunately I do not have a separate electric circuit for Audio/Video and all other electrical devices. and dimmer units are well known to cause problems in the power supply chain - e.g. like noise in your audio package. Please note: the experts told me: Check POW 05 can have other (receiver internal) causes also. Above is just my suspicion 8as a non-expert) for my case . Regards, Fred

SOURCE: marantz sr5001 has pcm light flashing

I suppose pcm light means that the pcm mode is turned on (pcm meaning pulse code modulation), in other words, the unit was switched to digital signal, so if the digital rca or optical TV input on your reciever is not connected to anything, then you're not getting any signal into the reciever in digital mode. You probably just need to switch the unit back to analog mode (see if there is a button that says something like digital/analog, pcm/analog, optical/coax or similar, try pressing it, see if there is any change).

I might just be totally wrong on this, however, probably the best way to learn what happened is to read the user manual if you do have it (see what the pcm light signals for and check any chapters inside the manual related to that topic).

good luck

SOURCE: My Marantz PMD 661 digtial audio recorder is

ALC Automatic Level Control

In other words, an audio compressor which reduces the level when the level gets too much.

Look up "audio compression" with Google for a complete treatise how it works.

Receiver turns off after it has played for a few minutes. I reset the light and it will run again for a while and then turns off.

There are a few possible causes:
1. Your receiver is broken.
2. One of your speakers has a short in it.

To tell which, disconnect all your speakers at the back of your Marantz, and turn it on. Does it stay on? If yes, then check your speaker wires and speakers one at a time for normal volume...

When I turn it on it works for several minutes then the display reads fan check and flashes several times then turns the system completely off.

This is an error code sense by the processor. Your fan may not working properly which turns your unit shuts down automatically to avoid further damage to some components most likely the output IC. Check if the fan is working. If not try to clean then reinstall. If still the fan doesn't work you have to confirm where the fault is. You can check the supply of the fan, it will read to ohmmeter within 12v dc. If there is a supply but the fan is not working then replace the fan with new one. If there wasn't a supply then this is an indication that you have a fault parts on its circuitry. Leave the expert to isolate the defective parts because it is quite technical.

I just picked up a used Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver that has no audio output on any of the channels. I obtained a service manual for it and have tried a few things, but dont know the source of the problem...

I have the same problem, how did you initiate debug mode ?
The receiver worked perfectly until a few days ago, then one day it didn't work when I turned it on but started working after a few minutes. The next day it did the same thing and the folowing day it didn't work at all. Have tried the power reset and also had the top off to see if there's anything really visibly burnt - nothing.
This receiver never got bad treatment, left on overnight a few times but not with sound running out, just powered up. It's a bit enclosed I guess so maybe overheated but I find it hard to believe.
Anyway, can someone advise how to initiate debug mode and also what to do with it.

There is no fuses for the speakers. Check setup. If the receiver has 7.1 channel input try to connect a source there so you can check output (amp) section and the speakers.
