Oven 70degrees too hot

The problem started with the oven overheating, to the point it was burning everything that was being baked. Purchased a thermostat from an appliance supply house. Installed the thermostat and now the oven temperature reads 70 degrees higher than set temperature no matter what it is set at. Checked the oven with two different thermomoters and exactly the same readings. Where do I look now?

I am assuming you have an electric oven and not a gas one, and that the thermostat bulb is in the correct place in the oven.
On most (not all) thermostats there is an adjustment screw usually behind the knob and often there is room to adjust the screw without removing the fascia. Electric thermostats when they work are either on or off and have a differential between the on/off positions. My experience is that there is up to 40 degrees Celsius difference so calibrating using only a thermometer is not very accurate. I use 2 x 3mm thick plates spaced about 10mm apart and have a thermocouple type thermometer with the end between the plates so as to reduce the radiant heat from the elements while they are on.
It takes about 20 - 40 minutes for the oven to preheat and reach optimum operating temperature. do not open the door at this time. Once you adjust the thermostat you have to leave it for around 20 minutes to get an accurate operational temperature again. Yes it can take a while. The other way is to place the thermostat bulb in a liquid at 180 degrees C and test the on/off range of movement in the thermostat. A lot of thermostats get less accurate further from the calibration point. If you have the means you can cool or heat the medium (oil?) to test the thermostat. I would recommend a multimeter with no electricity connected using the second method and often you can hear the thermostat click on/off without using a multimeter.

It sounds to me as though the thermostat has not been calibrated properly at time of manufacture.

Most thermostats are not 100% accurate, and it is acceptable to have + or - 10% leeway.
so if you set it for say 200oC then it is o/k for it to heat too 220oC OR 180oC,but yours is over this tolerance.
I suggest you always set it at 70oC lower than the temp you require, the other alternative is to take the stat back and get it changed.

Remove the dial for temp setting and re-seat at proper temp. Dial may be mis-aligned

What would cause the broiler element to override the baking element? My oven has lost its mind. It doesn't matter what setting I use, The broil element takes over and burns everything. Please help.


Not 100% sure but my guess. Most electric ovens usually bake with both elements on. The bake element(bottom) is usually on at full power with 240 volts to it. The broil element(top) is usually on at 1/2 power 120 volts to help even out the temperature. My guess is your bottom element is not coming on at all either because it is burned out or something in the control system. So what is happening is the oven is trying to heat to the set temp with only the top element keeping it on much longer than it normally should be on and burning everything. Now if you set the oven for bake and the top is on red hot, you have a control system problem something like a bad selector switch or main control board if the oven has a electronic control.

Oven burning food


Don't worry my wife does the same thing. Not sure if your talking about the range top or the baking potion. We'll assume the baking area. If your using cheap bakeware that could be part of the problem try using a different cake or loaf pan of heavy construction. Also you may try reducing your temp in 25 degree increments to see if your oven runs hot. Example buy 3 cheap frozen pizzas and if they say value at 400 try 375 , 350, and 325. If one of those temps gives the desired result assist accordingly and consider contracting Bosch customer service to inquire about how to fix thermostat errors.hope that helps I didn't have much to work with.

My oven will not heat up to temperature


It may be the bake element that has gone out. The self clean usually uses the broil element to heat the oven. And most oven will either put 120 volts to the broil element while baking or pulse the broil element while baking. This will cause the oven to get warm but not hot. Check the oven bake element it cound be bad or a wire may have burned off.

Broiler will not come on when baking


Take a look at the element ( the "tube" inside the oven that glows red hot when the oven is turned on). If the element is burned out it will not be hot and glowing. You may have a loose connection to the element but most likely it is burned out and needs replacing.
Our stove is 27 years old and I have had to replace top or bottom elements every 6 years or so. I just bought a replacement element at Canadian Tire in Calgary for about $34. Just undo the 2 screws around the element and attach the new element to the old wires.

Built in oven won't get hot

Usually, when an oven won't heat up or bake, it's because the bake element is burned out. The bake element is the black, pencil- thick tube at the bottom of the oven. When the oven heats, the element glows red. This element has an expected life-span of several years. It may last for only one; it may last for many more. When the element burns out, you need to replace it. Now if the oven It bakes poorly Here are two instances of when food "bakes poorly:" When the food you're baking is done on top but not on the bottom--or when baking just takes far too long to finish--the bake element may be burned out. You may get fooled into thinking it's working, because the oven is hot inside. But many electric ovens use the broil element, too, during the preheat and bake cycles. So the food may be getting heated only by the broil element, which causes poor baking results. If the bake element is burned out, replacing it should solve the problem. Otherwise, you need to further troubleshoot the oven's electrical system to locate the defective wire or component. When the temperature is consistent but too high or too low, it could be one of several different things. First check to see if the thermostat sensing bulb has come loose from its holder. It could be lying on the floor of the oven or resting on the heating element. This would cause the oven to not heat correctly. If the thermostat bulb is not dislodged, it's likely that the thermostat or sensor is either mis-calibrated or defective. Electronic ovens with a digital display use a sensor to monitor oven temperature. To solve temperature problems for these models, you may need to replace the sensor. On some digital-display models, you can calibrate the temperature using the key pad. See your operator's manual for details. Ovens without a digital display often use a mechanical system for controlling temperature. On many of these units, you can remove the thermostat knob and adjust the knob itself to more accurately represent the actual setting of the thermostat. If, when you remove the knob, there's a screw on the back of it with a small calibration plate, you can loosen the screw, adjust the plate, then tighten the screw again. If the knob isn't adjustable, and the oven temperature is off by more than 30 to 40 degrees, you need to replace the thermostat to solve the problem

My oven is burning my baked goods, but shows the right temp with a thermometer. Do I have to turn the dial to broil and then back to the desired temp? Even if the rack is in the middle, everything burns....


If it is convection bake you have to turn the temp down (25 degrees or so) that is listed in the recipe.

The broil setting is not used to bake because it operates differently from the bake setting. So, don't go to the broil setting at all.
The element for bake is under the floor of the oven. You have not indicated whether it is gas or electric, but both of these can have issues with the burner or element.

If you are baking on the correct setting and the oven is heating from the bottom, not the top, this can be caused by hot spots that are created by elements/burners.

to check, look under the floor of the oven. Turn the bake heat up to high and see if the flame is uneven. For an electric oven, the color of the element should be evenly red, no brown spots.

If you are using an oven thermometer, move the thermometer to the spot in the oven that seems to be burning things the most.

My oven burns everything.


Use a 'oven thermometer' in the oven and determine the 'actual temperature' in the oven. Your knob setting is off (not calibrated) and the oven is hotter than the control knob setting.

You may get fooled into thinking it's working, because the oven is hot inside. But many electric ovens use the broil element, too, during the preheat and bake cycles. So the food may be getting heated only by the broil element, which causes poor baking results.

If the bake element is burned out, replacing it should solve the problem. Otherwise, you need to further troubleshoot the oven's electrical system to locate the defective wire or component.

Trouble baking


Sounds like it's running too hot. Check temps. May have a stuck relay on board. Run oven and check to see if bake element is cycling off when it reaches temps. It should stop glowing within
15 minutes from start. If it doesn't you need a relay board most likely.
