Question about KitchenAid KSM150PS Artisan Series Stand Mixer

Kitchenaid Mixer bowl came loose, now beater doesn't spin

My wife was using the mixer and did not lock the bowl in completely. When it was started, the bowl came out and must have broken something internal because now the motor runs, but the beater does not move. Any ideas?

SOURCE: oil coming out of mixer above bowl

A standard maintenance procedure for these KitchenAid stand mixers requires periodically changes the grease in the gear housing. After several years and/or hard use, the grease eventually breaks down and becomes thin, like oil. The chrome ring above where the beater attaches is actually a "drip cup" and is designed to catch the oil, but eventually it overflows. The unit will need to be opened up and the old grease removed and replaced with a special high temperature grease recommended by KitchenAid (Part No. 4176597) Essentially, it is a high temperature type of grease that will resist breakdown for longer periods than standard bearing grease used for cars. It is a very common procedure and can be performed by a handy homeowner or a service center. To do it yourself will take about two hours and instructions can be found at several locations online. Once done, it will purr like new and last several more years.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid mixer. Top is loose so it bounces when

Hi MJANKOW520. I?m going to assume your KA mixer is a ?Tilt-Head? mixer. You don?t say specifically. Based on your description of the symptoms you mixer exhibits, I would say that your head locking mechanism (or a component) of it is either broken, worn or loosened due to normal wear and tear and need to be readjusted (or repaired) for it to keep your mixer head stationery. The inspection and troubleshooting of the inside of your mixer is a DITY capability, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty. Just be sure to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case, try K45SSW, and select the file listed under Parts List (check to see it this matches your mixer model). This parts list manual provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the part name and numbers. Turn to page3, titled: Base and Pedestal Unit. You?ll want to focus on Illus. #9, Link & Lever Latch assembly, which locks the mixer head to the pedestal when run your mixer. Check to see if something is just loose, exceedingly worn or broken. If something has broken, you can order replacement parts and install yourself. As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on other mixer components. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself. Finally, here's a link to an excellent site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.html If you feel this is beyond your capabilities and would be too difficult to do yourself you can take your mixer to a local small appliance repair shop and have them troubleshoot and fix your mixer. KA Customer Care can provide you with the name and phone # of the closest authorized KA repair shop in your area or you can do a Online web search, but be sure to get at least three estimates before deciding to commit to one repair shop. Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA If this solution has helped you, please rate it, thanks! - hslincoln

SOURCE: kitchenaid mixer makes a lot of noise. The beater

Hi - I've been searching for general info on KitchenAid stand mixers and ran across this so I'm throwing my $.02 in... Since KA stand mixer bases are essentially made of cast metal parts, there is a very slim chance that there is a lateral misalignment (side-side) unless it got dropped...eek! Sounds like a head height adjustment issue. Check out this from KitchenAid Conversations:

http://forum.kitchenaid.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3032

Good luck.

SOURCE: mixer head is loose

I assume you mean that the top half of the mixer, above the pivot pin, moves with respect to the lower half of the mixer, the stand part. There is a pin on which the top half pivots which becomes loose.

Turn the mixer over and look up where the pin goes through the two pieces. There is a screw there which secures the pin. Tap the pin into position and tighten the screw.

I know this sounds a bit simple but the bowl cup can sometimes actually wear out and a very fast (# screws) and a new one and the problem is solved. If however there is a problem on the head hold down set screw (under the mixer in the cavity ) it can come loose then the mixer head can bounce all over the place causung the bowl to get loose in the holding cup at the base of the mixer., I hope this helps, let us know if you need more, we can FixYa

You need to adjust the head height so that the flat paddle is just clearing the bowl. If the head will not lock in that position then you need to investigate the locking mechanism. If the lever goes right forward as far as the slot in the side will allow then you could have a bent rod inside.

Kitchenaid mixer glass bowl broke. I need a replacement. I have a 4c mixer. Do you know where I can find one?

The glass bowl for the 4c mixer is much different than the bowls that are currently available. Your best option is going to be to find a used bowl off of eBay.

Your other option would be to replace the bowl lock plate and buy a new bowl for the mixer. I have had a few customers say this works, and I have had a couple say that replacing the bowl lock plate and bowl did not work. So you can give this a try as well.

Is a kitchen aid model # KSM5PSAC the same as KSM150SP?

The KSM5 and the KSM150 are different mixers. They are both 5 quart mixers and use the same gearing and motor. However the bowl design is different. The KSM5 is a 5 quart bowl lift, which means the bowl locks into the arms of the mixer and raises towards the head of the mixer, where the ksm150 mixer is a artisan mixer, which is also a 5quart mixer, but the head of the mixer tilts back and the bowl twists into the base ring to lock into place. These two mixers will take different bowls and beaters.

My kitchenaid ksm150ps standing mixer's top seems to tilt down too low and bounces up and down when mixing

Hi DENISE, by the symptoms you describe it appears that it’s time to adjust your mixer’s Beater to Bowl Clearance adjustment screw, or head locking mechanism (or a component) of it is worn or loosened due to normal wear and tear and needs to be readjusted (or repaired) to keep your mixer head stationery and level.
The instructions for adjusting your beater to bowl clearance are located in your Owners Manual. If you don’t have the original manual you can easily download a PDF version of your Owners Manual from the KA website: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case KSM150 and select the file listed for your model that appears under Owners Manuals (66) KSM150PSER1.pdf (732.33 KB) and save that file to your PC. Turn to Page 14 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the mixer head height.
But to save you some time, I have extracted the instructions below:
Beater to Bowl Clearance
Your mixer is adjusted at the factory so that the flat beater just clears the bottom of the bowl. If for any reason, the flat beater hits the bottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl, clearance

Tilt-Head models
• Unplug mixer.
• Lift motor head.
07f1be1.jpg
• Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
• Make adjustment with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.
If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.

If the above doesn’t correct your problem, then you need to look at the Link & Lever Latch assembly. If you don’t have your parts list manual, select the file KSM150PSWH0.pdf (773.44 KB) listed under the Parts List Manual (61).
The manual provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the part names and numbers. Turn to page5, titled: Base and Pedestal Unit. You’ll want to focus on Illus. #11, Link & Lever Latch assembly, and the related components, which locks the mixer head to the pedestal when you run the mixer. Check to see if something is just loose, exceedingly worn or broken. If something has broken, you can order replacement parts and install yourself.
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com. Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Also, while your mixer is apart it would be ideal to check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your KA mixer yourself.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble, repair, and reassemble your mixer.
Finally, if you feel this is beyond your capabilities and will be too difficult to do by yourself you can take your mixer to a local small appliance repair shop and have them troubleshoot and fix your mixer. KA Customer Care can provide you with the name and phone # of the closest authorized KA repair shop in your area or you can do a Online web search, but be sure to get at least three estimates before deciding to commit to one repair shop.
Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Can you lengthen the beater by loosing a screw?

Hi, KLOEHR, your beater will not lengthen by losing a screw. However, if you lost your Beater to Bowl Clearance adjustment screw, then it might appear that your beater had ‘grown’ because now the beater may be touching the bottom of your mixing bowl, where previously it had not. Simply said, the beater didn’t grow the mixer head drooped.
