Question about Dell 1700n Laser Printer
When you hit the print button it goes through the process for print after 2-4 sec. the paper jam light comes on. you look and no jam. if you put a pice a paper in the manual feed it will work fine. it acts like the feed roller is not picking up the paper. i removed the ink cart. and inspect i found no pices in the tray as if something might have broken.
Do a Mr. clean act on all rollers coming in contact with paper. I use distilled alcohol and cotton and it has worked for me.

SOURCE: Paper Jam
We need to the model/make to help you
but using some detective skills I've decided you are using a HP machine
Yup Dirty damaged worn feed roller but what model machine is it they are all different but pull out tray 2 cassette all the way and look in, there is probally a cylinder like rubber roller 5cm wide front centre of where cassette slides in, there might be roller on the cassette too at the front center as well.
Most modern printers feed rollers just slide off after lifting small plastic tabs on them and gently pulling, feed rollers are available but you can sometimes also get results by cleaning them with a dash of metho or water on a rag.
If paper feeds 2wo sheets at once then you need to change the seperation pad/roller too.

SOURCE: paper jam
There is a sensor in the back that lets the printer know the paper has exited the fuser. It is probably broken off if paper is getting stuck back there.
Also check for paper remnants that are jammed. This may require removal of the fuser.

SOURCE: Will not feed from manual tray
Did you go into the control panel menu and verify that it is set to pick up from the manual tray?
There are 2 things that control that roller. One is the motor and the other is the logic board which gives the signal to the motor that controls the take up roller.Since the movement of the roller appears to be normal, the logic board may be at fault. Unfortunately I do not have the service manual on this model. In any case, you would need service on the unit.

Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.

What this light sequence means that the printer has a paper jam.
When a paper jam occurs, the printer stops and the operator panel's Paper Jam light and Continue button lights come on. Press and release Continue twice quickly to display the specific secondary error paper jam light sequence.
How to clear Paper Jam
?· Press Continue button twice quickly to see the secondary error code.
To get the secondary error codes
?· When the Error light (!) and Continue button lights are both on, a secondary error has occurred.
?· When the Paper Jam light (4th light) and Continue button lights are both on, a paper jam secondary error has occurred.
?· Press and release Continue button twice quickly to display the secondary error code light sequence.
Press Continue button to resume printing once all the jammed pages are cleared from the paper path.
We recommend that you clear the entire paper path when a paper jam occurs.
To clear a paper jam:
1 If you are feeding paper from a tray, remove the tray, and then remove any jams.
2 Open the front cover and remove the print cartridge assembly.
NOTE: Do not leave the print cartridge assembly exposed to direct light for an Extended period of time. Extended light exposure can cause print quality problems.
3 Remove any jams in the area behind the print cartridge assembly.
4 Lift the flap at the front of the printer and remove any jams beneath the flap.
5 Open the rear exit and remove any jams.
6 After you have cleared the jams, reinstall the print cartridge assembly, make sure all printer covers and trays are closed, and then press Continue button to resume printing.
NOTE: The printer reprints the pages that caused the paper jam.

85% of paper jams are caused by worn rollers Chances are, when your tech arrives, he'll tell you that the jams were caused by worn feed rollers. The rubber treads in the rollers wears down, making them smooth, so they won't pick up the paper. Sometimes, they are aged, which also gives them a smoother rounded texture, causing jams. The quick fix is to liven up that roller with a mixture of alcohol and soap. Damp a rag with the solution and wipe the rollers clean with it. That's make them more pliable and the paper jams will cease.
