Can I get a 300 dpi still shot using the Canon S5 IS?

DPI is short for Dots Per Inch and it actually refers to printer dots per inch. These days, when used in photo software, it means PPI, which are pixels per inch. DPI and PPI are two different things, yet often DPI is used when PPI is meant, so read its usage in context.

Dpi (actually ppi) is only important in case of printing. When you open a picture in Photoshop a dpi-number is mentioned. Don't pay attention to it. It doesn't tell you anything, you can change it in any number you want, it doesn't change anything of the picture. But beware: you have to uncheck the resample-box! Resampling means calculating a new amount of pixels. The moment resampling is off, you can change the dpi-number, the according printing-measure is given. It also works the other way around: change the printing-measure, the dpi-number of the picture will be shown.

How do I make a test page for my printer to check color.

You need to clarify :
1. Your printer cannot print color even though it prints color well from a test page;
2. Your printer cannot print color in a test print page.

If it is the first one, then you have to set it properly in Window Print Configuration page of that printer;
If it is the second one, then you have to check whether you have installed the color ink cartridge properly in the printer. If the color ink cartridge is installed properly, try to replace another new color ink cartridge. Finally it is still not work, then you have to bring back to the repair center.

This is the only advice I can give you.

The next step would be to disassemble the Epson, and clean the Pads/Heads. Click on link below.:

This has to do with the document printing properties. When you are ready to print a document, choose properties and make sure you go through the printer settings under that software.
The test page only verifies the cartridges. The printer properties of the software control the printer during printing.

What is the most likely reason for my Powershot G10 shooting at only 180ppi? Thanks.

You have it set to RAW for TIFF
First of all, I am assuming that when you say ppi you mean Pixels per
inch. If you take 2272 and divide that by picture size of 10", you
will be printing at about 227 ppi. PPI has to do with the printed
size. When printing in Photo shop, go to Image Size. Uncheck
"constrain proportions", and "resample image". When you enter the doc
size you will see the ppi it will print at.

ppi is not an intrinsic property of a digicam image. All cameras
output a default image size (where??--in the EXIF data?). which then
sets a ppi value.

What counts going in to Photoshop is the filesize in pixels. You can
set any print size you want.

I generally print at 250 - 300 ppi, but you can get pretty good
results down to 150. Upsampling will smooth out jaggies but will not
increase resolution.

In the printing preferences you need to select Black and white.

1. open the document you want to print
2. click file
3. click print
4. select printer from list, then click on preferences
5. look around the pages.

In Color tab I found a print in Grayscale - this setting will print the document in black and white colors, the pages may be diffrent on diffrent printers. look for black and white setting or Grayscale.

picture: printing preferences, color page on a hp printer, select grayscale with black cartridge only.

Re-Sized Photos are Grainy

Hi,

This camera takes pictures with a Ppi of 72. That is why the pictures look huge on the screen. To get good quality prints you need to have at least 200 ppi, or even better, 300 ppi.

Or, the contrast of the pictures may be to low. I have an FZ7 too, and I always tweak the contrast and color saturation before outputting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. images straight from the FZ7 are generally low in contrast.

2. Pictures that are low in contrast might not look too bad on screen, but when they are printed they will look slightly greyish.

3. Low ppi pictures look fuzzy in print.

Maybe you can post a sample original picture??

Printer prints top 1" of page, then just spits out blank pages

If the printer works ok on another PC, it seems quite clear that the problem is definately software (Driver) related. If you haven't done so already, I recommend adding the printer through the Printer\Faxes Add Printer Wizard and pointing it to take the drivers off the install CD (if you have one) rather than installing the printer from the CD Autorun. Just make sure that you've deleted the printer completely from Printers\Faxes and rebooted before each install attempt.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,
