Question about Ariens 34 In. Zoom Series Riding Mower

Open Question

Auger frozen Ariens 5520 lightly used, about 4 years old. The engine starts easily, but auger would not turn when the clutch was pulled in. I kept the clutch engaged long enough to smoke it. I never checked the lubricant level in the auger gearcase. I have a feeling the gears in the gearcase were frozen, or possibly the shaft. I remember seeing some lubricant leakage under the machine when it was relatively new. I think it may have been the gearcase lubricant, which means I used the machine a few times low on lubricant. Now there is a grinding, unhealthy sound when I pull in the auger clutch lever at the handle, and the auger remains frozen. By the way, the machine had not been used this season, and there was no water or ice buildup. How should I proceed to diagnose, and what would be the solutions? I Have some experience repairing motorcycles and cars. Thanks, Tony Gagliardi, Huntington station, NY

Thank you to trippssmengi and mrfixit-jerr. Turns ot that the auger of my Ariens Snowthrower was stuck by a stone which had lodged itself between the "fan" , which is behind the auger, and the housing. The smoking was from the rubber belt. This fix involved simply dislodging the stone!

With the belt off try to turn the impeller by hand, if it does not turn then you will have to take the mahine apart to check inside the gear box.If it is the gears it will be easier to get the whole gear box assembly which includes the gear box, auger shaft and probably the worm shaft. If you go to www.ariens.com you can get a complete breakdown fo your machine which will help in getting the machine apert and back together.

Both augers turn when not trying to clean snow,as soon as I try to use it and snow gets to the augers, only one auger moves on my ariens 520 snowblower

It sounds like the auger always turning is the auger engagement handle/line/connections are not adjusted correctly. They/it is too tight causing the auger to engage before it should. It may be up at the handle where you loosen a jam nut, screw in or out a threaded shaft, and retighten the jam nut. (If you have ever adjusted a bicycle brake it is similar.) (I have a craftsman, made by MTD, and I think I saw MTD also list Ariens.) Or it could be an adjustment somewhere else (but I'm not sure where).

As far as one auger moving and the other not, you may have a shear-pin (shear bolt as the manual calls them) on each side of the auger's shaft (my craftsman has one on each side), and the one on the side that stops turning is sheared off. (It moves without snow present due to the driveshaft inside the outer auger shaft turning, but it won't turn under load (snow).) You may confirm a sheared-pin by turning the machine off and try to turn the auger blade. If it turns somewhat easily, that's a bad shear pin. Remove the old shear pin. If the old one is as long as the new one, that aint the problem. The shear pin in the image is one kind. Mine appear as a straight bolt (no grooves), threaded the entire length. You will have to rotate the auger blade until it aligns with the hole in the shaft. Use a nail that fits and rotate the blade until the nail goes in. Remove the nail and screw in the shear bolt:

The auger clutch control up at the handle looks like this:

Auger Control
  • To check the adjustment of the auger control, push forward the left hand clutch grip until the rubber bumper is compressed. There should be slack in the clutch cable.
  • Release the clutch grip. The cable should be straight. Make certain you can depress the auger control grip against the left handle completely.
  • If adjustment is necessary, loosen the hex jam nut and thread the cable in (for less slack) or out (for more slack). Recheck adjustment. Tighten the jam nut when correct adjustment is reached.
Here's another view of that:

I hope the above info helps you take care of both issues.

Fix ariens snowblower 520 dies when engaging the auger lever

Your front end is jammed. Its either frozen or there is a rock or something jamming it up. Before you start engine reach down chute and turn back impeller that throws the snow out of blower. Should turn freely. when its free its fixed. You will probably need a new belt.

Ariens st350 snow blower wont blow snow, augers wont spin

there is a bolt that goes thru auger and spinning shaft (look for a hole where it once was) holds the augers to the spinning shafts, it is called a shear pin, it is a safety feature, and made of softer metal, so if you pick up something too hard with the auger, it wont lock up the engine, or break engine crank shaft.find an ariens repair shop to purchase the shear pin so you get the right softness of metal.

Ariens 8.5 HP snowblower, 5 years old, recoil starter will not let me pull the rope out and the electric starter is not engageing, thoughts?

First I would take out the spark plug then try tugging on the rope. If no success take a ratchet and a deep well socket that fits the nut on the flywheel tighten and loosen the nut with out restricting the flywheel does the engine turn over? Does it move then stop after you loosen the nut? If it does then check the oil. If it is low or none in there then the motor froze up and needs replacement. If this was no help check in the shoot for obstructions like a newspaper stuck in the auger or the thrower.

Ariens snowblower impeller not throwing snow

Sounds like you have a broken or partially broken shear pin in the auger.Check along the auger[machine off]and see if there is what looks like a bolt anywhere along the auger shaft. If there is [and there will be] remove and inspect it and you will see why the auger is not working.Next time, never clean out a chute or auger while the engine is running, people loose limbs this way.

Why does only the right auger turn?

You most likely have a shear pin sheared on that side.
If you engage that slip diff., it engages both wheels like a posi-trak.

Auger turning slow. Auger turns initially but auger stops turning when it hits the snow. Shear pins look ok, belt looks ok. Shear pins look intact. Could they be broken inside where I can't see.

sure sounds like a shear pin, usually one end will be missing if it is broke. They are simple to replace but get one that is rated for your machine to avoid damage. Can you turn it freely without the engine running?? if so, it's the shear pin

My ariens 824 wont go forward or reverse. snow thrower still works. wheels start to move a bit then stop

I would check your traction drive disc for wear or shredding. With low or little fuel in tank you can safely grab handle bars and lift machine up on it's auger housing. Then remove shield from under machine and inspect metal disc with rubber around it.If rubber looks worn you can get a replacement traction drive disc easily from most small engine repair shop's or go online and look for your nearest Ariens dealer.
