Question about Creative Labs Zen Digital Media Player

My Zen freezes when I try to delete music files.

Whenever I try to delete music files from my zen, I can only delete a couple of files before my zen freezes. I do have a V Plus 2GB player that I can delete large amounts of files at one time, like if I went into artists and deleted all the artists whose names began with the letter A, and so on, but my new 16GB Zen will freeze after only about 5 or 6 files. And since this is a larger device, it takes forever to delete files manually from the device itself. What can I do to help my Zen work better with Windows media player?

The newer Zens have a little reset hole in the bottom that you can stick a pin or a staple in, and that will reset it - just like when your computer freezes. If it's not the newer one it could very well still have such a hole, I just can't recall where it would be located. If you have your manual there could be instructions about resetting it in there.good luck happy holiday

When you encounter a song that is freezing your zen, you need to delete it from the zen. At that point try to transfer it again. If it is copy protected then you may need to remove the copy protection.

The "iTunes format" is nothing more than AAC. The Creative Zen will play unprotected iTunes Plus tracks as well as CD rips from iTunes (M4A). Any DRM'ed tracks that you may have purchased through iTunes will not play on Zen.

google for "hymn project" or "myfairtunes" for iTunes DRM removal. (And for "FU4WM" for WMA DRM removal.)

Alternatively, you can always burn the DRM'd tracks (copy-protected songs), then rip them so they are no longer protected.

I've had a 16GB Zen for a couple of months now and really like it. Sound is good (I've paired it with Logitech wireless headphones) and battery life seems to be as advertised. Navigation of menus is easy although buttons are a little small but I guess that's price you pay for small size of unit. I don't use Creative's software at all, doing everything thru Windows Media Player. I'm constantly changing playlists and it's easier to do in WMP, somewhat awkward on the player. This has caused me a few problems as everytime I delete a playlist from the player & re-copy a revised one from WMP I get a few duplicate tracks put on player. Then I have to manually delete each of them from the player. PITA! Also, after a couple of times of deleting either tracks or playlists from the device, it seems to start acting funny, sometimes locking up. I have to use the cleanup option on it and then everything seems to be OK. Concerned, tho, that one of these times it won't be OK. Overall, however, I'm happy with the player and would recommend it. This is also the first player I've owned and there are quite possibly things I'm not doing right to cause the problems I'm having.

I have had the creative zen for awhile now and it works great I have had no majorproblems with it only minor problem as with most mp3 players it may freeze up but luckily you have a reset button if this happens simply go to creatives website and download the latest firmware and it should quit freezing up. I love this player because it is so much cheaper than microsoftsipod and it has much more features. Soby all means get this player. I think the people who post comments like the zen are obviously doing something wrong or bought a defective player wich is always a risk with all players.

You can use creative centrale, but I personally wouldn't suggest it. It is overcomplicated. Whenever I transfer music I usually just use Sync on Windows Media Player.

Sounds like you got a faulty HD. You can replace it yourself by following instructions on the I-net or have someone else do it for you if your Zen is out of warranty.

My creative zen keeps freezing!

Hi -
I know this response is way late to help you, but I was having the same problem. I could turn the zen on fine, but as soon as I tried to play music it would freeze and I couldn't turn it off. Using the reset button didn't help any since it would still freeze if I tried to play anything.

But I found reformatting the entire zen totally fixed it.

-directions-
Connect your zen to your computer, go to windows explorer, click computer on the side bar, and your zen should be under "portable devices". Click on it. You should now be viewing the "storage media". Right click and select "Format...". This completely resets the zen, clearing any preferences or media you put on it and the freezing problem.

It was annoying putting all the pictures, videos, and itunes back onto my zen, but at least it works now. Since I've reformatted it, I have had no problems.

Hopefully this helps others who experience this problem.

My creative Zen 8Gb wont allow more than 597 songs..

I'll run a cleanup on your zen, if that doesn't work then you should format it and re-transfer everything. Additionally, you may want to upgrade your players firmware.

How to enter the Zen’s Recovery Mode for Clean Up, Format All, Reload Firmware, and Reboot:

1. With the Zen off, press and hold the "play/pause" button.

2. Continue to hold until you perform Steps 3 and 4. If you accidentally release the button, start the procedure again.

3. Gently push the end of a thin object (like a pin or straightened paperclip) into the Reset hole. You should be able to feel the release click of the button.

4. Slide the On/Off/Lock switch towards the power button and hold until the boot screen appears on the display.

The Recovery Mode screen appears, and four menu items are shown:

Clean Up: A cleanup of the file system and database files takes place. All (uncorrupted) data should stay in tact. When the cleanup is complete, select Reboot. Your player restarts and starts rebuilding its music library. All files should remain intact unless they were detected as being corrupt.

Format All: This will completely reset the Zen and remove all user stored files on it.

Reload Firmware: This will prepare the Zen to accept a reload, new, or older firmware based on the specific firmware file you download and execute on a computer. Selecting this option will prevent your Zen from being able to boot, so make sure you have the firmware file on you computer and ready to load.

Reboot: This will execute a soft reboot of the Zen's operating system.

How to Clean Up, Delete Temp Files, and Reformat the Zen using Zen Media Explorer:

1. Plug the Zen.
2. Go to Zen Media Explorer.
3. Select "Settings and Information".
4. Select the "Tools" Tab.
5. This page will show you the options to Clean Up, Delete Temp Files, and Reformat the Zen.

(Warning: When reformatting, you will lose all files you put on the Zen)

It Freezes Before It Goes To The Menu

This is important; because, if you cannot get into Recovery Mode, then this is a sure sign of a bricked player. You could try a forced hard reset by going in and disconnecting the battery, but chances are, the player is bricked.
try updating the firmware.
