yes, you can download images and movie files from camera to computer.
you need to install software cd provided along with camera accessories, check camera box / packing.
images can be downloaded by usb cable and movie files download needs iLink (dv 1394) standard cable and dv input port in computer.
need further info, let me know.

Hi Heart of Chr....

Here is the USB driver for your Sony Handycam DCR-HC52e:

http://www.camerahacker.com/Forums/Video%20Camera/Sony/Sony_DCR-HC21_xp_driver_needed.files.hidden/USBDRVEN.EXE

The Firewire driver is already bundled with Windows XP.

Software for viewing, editing and transferring:
DCRHC52 is compatible with Windows Movie Maker & Apple iMovie, meaning you can usually begin editing your footage straight away usingthe software already installed on your PC.

Hope this helps :)
Season's Greetings!

Did you follow the driver installation correctly? Some installs want the cable disconnected while the drivers are installed, others want the cable connected , while others want you to connect the cable during the driver install. you also may need a more recent driver for your operating system.

How do I download from my handycam straight to my

You need the connecting cable that came with the unit it has a mioni USM or pin connector one end and USB to the computer at the other end.
Windows discovers the camera via the USB cable and allows transfer of material.
If you dont have a cable purchase the right one from a camkera store

Sony DCR-HC52E connected with Firewire not detected in moviemaker

The Camcorder will flash the DV IN message as soon as the i.LINK/Firewire cable is connected to the Camcorder.

If you are getting the DV IN message then it indicates that the Camcorder recognize the connection.

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Computer.

Refer this link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

If you are not getting the DV IN message as soon as the i.LINK cable is connected with the Camcorder then the issue may be with either the Camcorder or with the i.LINK cable.

Try resetting the Camcorder or try with different i.LINK cable. Locate the RESET button behind the LCD screen of the Camcorder. (You will be able to locate the RESET button by opening the LCD Screen. The Camcorder should be switched ON when you reset the unit. Press the RESET button using a sharp-pointed object).

NOTE: Resetting the Camcorder will reset the settings of the Camcorder to the factory settings including date and time. It will not delete any data saved in the Camcorder.

If the issue still persists after resetting the Camcorder and with different i.LINK cable then your Camcorder requires service to resolve the issue.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
