Carriage return problem

I have a Smith Corona Electra CT typewriter. when i press the return key, it returns the carriage fine to the next line and to the beginning margin, but it's as if the thing that's supposed to hold it there is not working, so it quickly slides back to the end of the line and rings the bell. This is very annoying as it renders my typewriter pretty useless until i can fix the problem.

any and all help appreciated. thanks.

The tab button may be stuck or the carriage release lever is stuck or a broken escapement.

On the right hand side of the roller, there are two levers you can pull forward. That should fix it.

Why does paper not advance to next line when carriage returns?

There might be a setting for how many lines it moves when the carriage gets to the end. It is mechanical so you'll see it!

Margin bypass is in down position when typewriter is off and carriage return key will not work

Check you shroud or keyboard cover, if they get bumped it can bind the MR key (margin release). Re-align cover plate for proper clearance.

Smith Corona 235 DLE doesn't advance

Does the platen move or does the paper not advance? Check the paper release lever to make sure the feed wheels are snapped in place. If the platen does not move something in the paper feed motor area.
