Question about Apple iBook G4 Mac Notebook

1 Answer

The computer is locked up (multi colored wheel spinning) t

My brother has special needs and I bought a little ibook g4 for him to get on the Internet. That is all he does - MySpace, Yahoo, YouTube and some other websites. This is our first day using a Mac so learning.............His computer just locked up while on the Internet. The multi colored wheel was spinning and would not let us close out any of hte 4 screens he had open. When that occurs what is the recommended steps? Is there a way to manually shut off the computer like on a pc one would use task manager (ctrl-alt-del)???

We just turned off by holding down power button for 4 or 5 seconds. I am concerned that his system will crash if he is constantly doing that? Then again, I gave the system 6months. Given his severe special needs I felt if he made it 6 mos with the ibook it was a success.

He does love it and it is soo wonderful to see him with such pride over owning his own laptop!!

Thank you for your assistance and any additional "tips" you can quickly send would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays to you!!!

You can go to the Apple (top left) and on the drop down menu, select "force quit"(which is similar to CTRL-ALT-delete on PC) and quit the program that is locking up.The fact that it locks up with 4 screns oprned tells me that the iBook may need more memory.I believe that the iBooks come with 256 MB. You can add memory and keep this from happening.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Dude, if you have all the current updates for your OS and applications, then you got a logic board issue. Especially if you you keep seeing the spinning beach ball of death or the dreaded white screen of death.
The iBook G4 is the poster child for logic board defects, because it has to do with the way the circuit boards were flowed.  Apple won't fix this for the iBook G4.  You got to do a big class action lawsuit like they did with the iBook G3 before they will replace the logic board.
Best bet is to sell this thing on e-bay as a non-working unit and get you a better laptop.

If by "lock up" you mean the mouse/keyboard freezes and the machine becomes unresponsive to any input, and you have already replaced the memory with a known good memory, you may have a logic board problem (not necessarily, but quite possible).
First place to start is by running the Apple Hardware Test from the DVD that came with your unit. (The test is specific to each model of Mac, so don't try to run it off someone else's DVDs unless they have the same model you do.) If you no longer have these, an Apple-Certified Macintosh Technician will have a special Apple DVD containing the collected tests for all models of Mac.

Not able to install system software

Leopard is not really suited for the iBook G4.  I would recommend you go back to Tiger and see if that gets rid of your lockup.  Leopard is more suitable for the Macbook.

IBook G4 boot sequence never shows the gray apple and the little spinning ring. It eventually goes from black screen to the boot condition. The iBook currently has no battery installed.

This laptop suffers from a known condition of the logic board and bad flow issues of the ic board chip where your left palm rests on the keyboard.  You gonna have ta get the logic reflowed or install a new logic board.  This process is a real pain in the as. because the computer is a real bit.h to open.  The Apple techs put like 20 million screws of varying lengths and shapes to really pi.s us service techs off when we try to service these things.

IBook G4 will not come on

You should be able to sucessfully boot from the original installation CD. If not, there is another problem with the computer. The iBook G4's are known to have logic board problems, which could very well be causing this problem. The logic board problem is very costly to fix. Over $300. There are solutions that you can do yourself online. I did this on my iBook and it continued working. Let me know and I'll send you a link to repair this yourself.

Try running Disk Utility which is located in Applications/Utilites folder and run a permissions and disk repair. Also, check and make sure that your mac is up-to-date with software updates.
