Question about HP Compaq 6820s Notebook

1 Answer

I did a backup and recovery. Followed instructions.

I cant get my files (pictures and video) back when I try to recover them. It talks about a (d) drive partion. I've been told there may be issues with windows and HP recovery not working together. When I try to find the file it shows nothing there. I cant find a (D) drive on my computer.

What can I do to rescue data deleted by pressing "Shift+ Delete" on Windows 7?

Using Shift+Delete to remove files/folders bypasses the recycle bin which is your normal means of recovering accidentally deleted files. You can go to download.com and search for file recovery programs. Some are available that will search your hard drive and can maybe recover what you lost. It is important to do so as quickly as possible because once files are permanently deleted on the hard drive, the sectors that they occupied are no longer protected and can be overwritten by any program or file.

Recover deleted files from my laptop

Hello, Don't worry. You can rely on this photo recovery software (also recover audio and video files); it can help you recover your lost pictures from your Samsung Digital Camera (or SD card):
Photo Recovery for Windows Users
http://www.uflysoft.com/photo-recovery-win/
Photo Recovery for Mac Users
http://www.uflysoft.com/photo-recovery-mac/
By the way: Before your pictures are retrieved, do not save more files to the device (or memory card) in case the original files (your pictures) are overwritten.
Best wishes!

I bought a used laptop,a dv4000, and would like to know how to restore back to out-of-box factory settings

Hi and Welcome to fixya!

In order to reset your machine to the factory settings, just follow these steps:

Access the HP Backup and Recovery Manager

1. Turn on the computer and hold down the "F11" key once the BIOS prompts appear on the monitor.

2. Click on the button labeled "Advanced Options" in the Welcome Screen once the Recover Manager opens. Choose the "System Recovery" option and click "Next."

3. If the "Microsoft System Restore" window appears, select "No" and click "Next."

4. The Recovery Manager will then prompt you to back up any important files as the restoration process will delete all data on the computer's hard drive. If you wish to perform a backup first, select "Back up your files first," click "Next" and follow the on-screen instructions. If not, choose the "Recover without backing up your files" and click the "Next" button. The computer will then begin the restoration process and restore the HP DV4000 to its original factory settings.

Hope this helps!

How do you restore it

All HP's and Compaqs (as far as I know) come pre-installed with a recovery partition. This replaces the functionality of a recovery CD or DVD, only without the hassle of losing or scratching a recovery CD or DVD. There is one drawback to this method; namely that if the hard drive (or more likely for you) solid state drive gets damaged or erased, you run the risk of also erasing this recovery partition. If this happens, you will need to go to HP's website to order a recovery USB key. Information for ordering a recovery key can be found here. Keep in mind you can only order one recovery key per system, so if you do have to take this route, be sure to create another using the information at the bottom of this post.

  • Press the Power button to start the PC, and then press the f11 key when the standard BIOS prompts are displayed on the black screen.
NOTE: Pressing the f11 key during startup on a computer with an HP factory image will start the system recovery process even if the prompt is not displayed.
    • If the HP Recovery Manager can access the recovery partition on the hard drive, a prompt to backup the user files before beginning the recovery is displayed. Follow any on-screen instructions.
    • If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix any system errors, you will need to use the personalized recovery disc that you created to recover the hard drive to its original condition.
    • If you have not created the personalized recovery disc, or the discs are corrupted, you can order a replacement recovery disc from HP.
  • If prompted to use the Microsoft System Restore program, click No , and then click Next .
  • When prompted, if you want to backup your personal files and settings, select the Back up your files first (recommended) option, and then click Next . Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • When prompted to Recover without backing up your files , please STOP before clicking Next . WARNING: This is the final opportunity to change your mind about recovering the PC and deleting all the files and programs. Once you click Next , the restore process cannot be stopped.
  • If you are satisfied that you want to begin the recover process, click Next . The PC immediately begins formatting the hard drive and destroying all data.
  • The recovery process may take up to several hours and will return the PC to its original condition. Any custom settings, drivers, software programs and updates, and/or hardware updates are lost and must be reinstalled.

Once this process is complete, you can create a recovery USB drive using the procedures outlined below:

There are three options for recovering these mini notebook PCs to their original operating system image.
    • Option 1 - Use the Recovery Manager program on the recovery partition on PC. For Windows 7, turn on the power switch, press Esc key at boot followed by F11 key for the recovery menu. For XP, press F6 key for Roxio BackOnTrack utility.
    • Option 2 - Create a personal set of recovery media. For Windows 7 and XP use the HP Recovery Manager to create a recovery image on either a DVD or an 8 GB USB flash drive). For XP, use Roxio BackOn Track to create a recovery image.
    • Option 3 - One-time purchase of the Recovery USB recovery key.
The USB Recovery key can be purchased from the HP web site. The USB key is larger than normal thumb drive. HP can ship only one USB recovery key per unit.

If Windows starts to load instead, restart the computer and try again. 3 Press the arrow keys on your keyboard to select Repair Your Computer, then press ENTER. Gateway System Recovery starts, and the System Recovery Options dialog box opens. 4 Select a language and keyboard layout, then click Next. 5 Click the User name box to select a Windows user account, click in the Password box and type the user account’s password (if any), then click Next. The System Recovery Options menu opens. 6 Click Restore Application. The Welcome to Gateway System Recovery window opens. 7 Click Next. 8 To perform a recovery with data backup (recommended), click Recovery with automatic data backup, then click Next. Important Before your hard drive is recovered, your personal files will be automatically backed up to c:\backup. - OR - To perform a full factory recovery without data backup, click Full factory recovery, then click Next. Caution Continuing with the full factory recovery will delete everything on your hard drive. Make sure that you have backed up any important files you want to save. 9 Click Yes, then click Next. The Factory image recovery window opens, which shows you the progress of the system recovery. When recovery is finished, the Recovery is complete window opens. 10 Click Finish, then click Restart.
