Hello kc9iid.

"Any suggestions?" ... Yes. Here's a quick few:

If it's showing in your WinXP's "Device Manager", try reinitializing it.

1. Select the device (maxtor 3200 160gb), then right-click > "Uninstall" it.
2. Reboot (instead of rebooting, you may also simply do a menubar > "Actions" > "Scan for hardware changes". However, if you haven't already rebooted since problem was recognized, this is a good time to do it now. If left un-done, you'd be amazed how often that one action alone will work wonders).

If that brings no joy, see if the drive is reflected in your "Disk Management" console [Start > Run... > type "diskmgmt.msc" (without quotes), then "OK"].

If it's not there, your registry is probably configured to "hide" (not display) the specific drive letter assigned to this drive. You can both check and correct this by getting "TweakUI". Download it here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/TweakUI.shtml. After it downloads, launch it, then ensure the subject drive letter is checked ON [TweakUI > left colunm "My Computers" > "Drives"].

Good luck, and post back with a status report and/or any further questions.

Hi!

Go to Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management

You may check there if the USB hard drive is properly configured. It may appear in the Device Maganer but if it's not properly configured in the Disk Management, it will not appear in My Computer.

Happy Holidays!

Its possible that the drive is assigned a drive letter that is already in use by another drive (for example drive e:)

right-click on My Computer once
Choose MANAGE
in the management screen you'll find the Drive Management tool. This will show drives attached.
DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO DRIVE C:!!!!
you should notice a drive listed that does not have a letter assigned. you can then right-click on that drive and choose CHANGE DRIVE LETTER AND PATHS. choose a drive letter that is not in use.

That should do it.

Is it showing up in your USB system tray icon as a device?

Go to the Computer Management interface from the Administrative Tools. In there is a Disk Management node. See if the disk drive shows up there. Maybe it is listed without a drive letter and you need to supply one in order to see it in "My Computer".

Also, has the drive shown up properly before and is just suddenly not showing? Or is this the first time you're trying to use it? When you connected it to the USB port, did a little tooltip window appear and say it located a new hard drive? It should then install the right driver and notify you that it is ready for use. There is a chance you might need an updated device driver...

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

I have maxtor basic 500G ex works fine when I plug into old laptop with XP, but when I plug in to new laptop with Windows 7 it says I have to format drive..Why is this?

Try opening the device manager and changing device removal policy to "Better Performance" (remember to always safely remove the device afterwards or you'll likely lose data).

Also, verify that the partition type is recognized in Local Computer > Drive Management and the drive letter doesn't conflict with anything else.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?
