Question about HP OmniBook Vt6200 Notebook

English language support on laptop with German Keyboard

I have a HP vt6200 Omnibook laptop with German Keyboard. Recently my internal harddisk crashed and I replaced with a new IDE disk. I installed Windows XP (English US) afresh. Also installed the necessary drivers downloaded from HP site. Now the german keyboard is not working. It types multiple characters & behaves erratically. When I connect an external US English Keyboard, it works perfect. I tried changing the language/keyboard settings. It didn’t work.

I donot want to use German anymore on that laptop. All I want to use is only English. Now I am unable to use the laptop keyboard at all. Pls help !

The easiest solution will be to locate a replacement laptop keyboard for that model. they arent hard to replace and usually cost between $40 and $80. I would web search HP Spare parts Third party is usually cheaper. Keyboards are pretty common replacements on laptops due to wear an tear. Most are replaced using a small phillips screwdriver. Its likley you can find removal instructions on the web as well (if they dont come packaged with the keyboard.

Problem with a Dell Keyboard

  1. Click Start , type intl.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Expand the language that you want. For example, English (United States).
  5. Expand Keyboard list, select the United States-International check box, and then click OK.
  6. In the Default input language list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 4), and then click OK two times.
  7. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.

Notice that the Language bar appears on the taskbar. When you position the mouse pointer over it, a ToolTip appears that describes the active keyboard layout.
  8. Click the Language bar, and then click United States-International on the shortcut menu that appears.

The United States-International keyboard layout is selected.

My @ key has moved to 2 how do i get it back to its normal Passion @

Hi,
The standard keyboard language and widely used setting is "ENGLISH (US)"
Set the Keyboard layout to English US so that you have standard keys for symbols etc. like @ sign with SHIFT+2 etc.

The keyboard layout / Language of your PC may have been different (other than English US), so follow these steps to select the International keyboard layout:

- Go to Control Panel - Regional and Language settings
- On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards.
- Click Add.
- Expand the language that you want. For example, English (United States).
- Expand Keyboard list, select the United States-International check box, and then click OK.
- In the Default input language list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 4), and then click OK two times.
- In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.

The above steps would change the Keyboard Layout settings to 'English US' and you would be able to type @ sign with SHIFT+2

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Check the Language setting of your Keyboard in CONTROL PANEL. It needs to be set into "ENGLISH" as a default. Or other way, go to "SYSTEM RESTORE" from the previous date that it was working okay. Thank you.

Dark screen, no backlight

I am sure that your BACKLIGHT is dead...Have someone or a tech take a look at it. The problem can be the backlight or the inverter itself... But most likely it's the backlight that goes out. You might be better of getting the LCD screen replace... Unless you find the backlight for that laptop model...

But first, play around with the BRIGHTNESS settings, make sure it's not on VERY LOW...

Hi there.
while you have the external monitor plugged in and you have the display on that monitor, hold down Fn and look for a F key which has a TV/monitor icon on it and hit that key (you may have to hit this once or twice) this is whats called the keyboard toggle switch, if your laptop monitor comes on then the problem is sorted and you can disconnect the external monitor.
Post back with the results please

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

Problem with keyboard replacement in IBM Thinkpad R52

The keyboard you purchased (39T0704) is a US English keyboard. Change your input local in your "Keyboard" "Control Panel" to "EN English (United States)" and all your keys should work. As far as getting the English keyboard to work in German or Polish is very unlikely.
