You will have to go your BIOS settings. What its doing is the BIOS is looking for a removable storage to booot to before it looks for your actual hard drive. You will have to change the order of boot checking to where your hard drive is first.
Reboot your computer without the drive connected.
While still on the black screen that looks like DOS, it should come up and say press F2 (or some other key) to get to SETUP.
Press the key rapidly until the screen comes up.
If it dosnt come up then you were to late and then reboot your system and start pressing it repetadly agian right when it turns on.
Navigate in your BIOS menu to find BOOT OPTIONS.
Once there rearange the list to where IDE or HARD DRIVE 1 is first on the list.
Press the exit button and make sure to save chages not discard them.
Then try connecting it and turning on.

I have a WD 500GB that I was using on our Mac. The lights on the external drive come on and I can hear the drive turning, but the computer no longer recognizes the drive. I tried the WD500 in a regular...

I've had this same problem - in my case it seems to have been dust. Disconnect the drive, then blow air into all of the vents several times. Use compressed air designed for electronics, if possible. This may bring it back to life.

WD is very good about supporting their products. The web site provides a place to enter a serial number and mode - they will replace it if it is still under warranty. Of course, your data will be lost if the drive no longer functions.

Either way, if you get it working, I'd recommend copying the data off to a another drive - this one may be going bad, even if it works for now. You should always have 2 copies of anything important.

Good luck.

Okay this is a internal SATA drive so what you can do is take it out of its failing case and put it into your computer or buy a new enclosure for it. I have a Mybook TB drive and my works great with no problems. But you can take this to WD western digital as its warrentied foe 3 full years!!

Problem accessing WD Passport Elite drive

The solution to this is associated with the power supplied by your laptop to the drive. It seems the passport drive needs about 1000mA of current which will be supplied by two USB ports on a laptop. It should be fine with a desktop USB port though is what I was told.

Wester Digital My Book 1 TB problems

Try booting your computer first and then connect the usb cable to the usb port on the computer. Connect the power supply cord directly to a wall socket. Also try the usb cable on different usb ports on the computer. If possible also try it with a different usb cable. If nothing works, check the file format system under disk management, you might have to re-format it.
