flash pops open and makes a mechanical clicking noise, but won't flash in any mode.  Is it broken?

I have the same problem. It seems like the camera does not know the built in flash is popped up.

I've attached a hot-shoe flash to it and that works fine.

Quick solution: enable the "auto ISO" setting in the menus. This will automatically recognize low-light conditions, and adjust the ISO accordingly.

That is a problem that has to do with the Flash...make sure your flash settings are not turned on. If the flash can't find an image...it rotates and usually never finds the image. It's reading in a Flash mode.

Light facial detail in my Nikon D60

Are you using the flash? If so, dial in some negative flash exposure compensation. Otherwise simply dial in some negative exposure compensation.

However, you will have to leave behind the Auto and the other point&shoot modes.

What settings should I use for my Nikon d60 with a 70-300mm lens to take picures of a night time football game? When the sun goes down, my camera slows and the pictures get blurry.

Set the ISO as high as it will go and the aperture as low as possible. That is as good as it gets without investing a lot of money in pro cameras and lenses that are needed to shoot action in low light. I have a D300 and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens that together cost almost $4000 and it can barely do it. How bad do you want pictures?

Nikon D60 is suddenly taking very dark pictures

I have had "dark pictures" from each of my Nikon DSLR (D70, D80, D200, D300) cameras usually when taking pictures from a tripod and/or the self timer. Situations where you take your eye away from the viewfinder which allows stray light to enter thru the viewfinder and throw the auto exposure way off. Not sure if this is what is happening to you.
