Maybe a headlight relay or fuse..could also be bad battery or alternator.

Check for a pin hole in either headlight lamp. The halogen lighting circuit will not work when a lamp loses its hermiticity (air tightness seal)

SOURCE: 1987 Ford Ranger stuck in 4 wheel drive!!

Chances are the linkage for the transfer case is out of adjustment try loosening the adjuster bolt and put the 4WD shifter into the position 4WD high or low (depending upon which position it's lockup in) then lock down the adjuster bolt, try to shift out of 4wd sometimes you need to go forward and backward with the vehicle to get it out of 4wd, when you get it out of 4wd you may have to fine tune the adjustment to get it to engage and disengage smoothly it's a trial and error thing keep resetting adjuster until you get the desired effect.

SOURCE: 1987 FORD RANGER WONT START AFTER JUMP STARTING IT

to eliminate the battery or alternator: go to a parts store leave your motor running. they will come outside with the tester and test your battery and alternator free. prior to this locate where your battery cable hooks to the starter and check to make sure the nut hasnt vibrated loose (try moving the cable side-to-side). u dint specify whether the engine was turning over and wouldnt start or nothing was happening.

SOURCE: where do i find a transmission for a 1987 bronco 2 or ford ranger

I would check car-part.com. It's a website that will show available parts for your car from auto recycler's in your area.

Headlight switch replaced on my 1987 ford ranger but still no lights

Have you checked fuses, there should be one for left and one for right. And I am assuming no high beam either but have you changed bulbs. If you have done both then it is time to start tracing wires and verifying voltage and grounding.

Headlight Switch Connector

This is the curse of the old Ranger. I would use two flat tip screwdrivers to pry them apart and have a friend hold the grey terminal while you do this. If you spray WD-40 or PB blaster on it it may seperate but you run a chance of damaging the electrical connections on the inside of the terminal if you do this. I would just replace the whole headlight assembly it's only like fifteen dollars but don't quote me on that.
