Is the radio wired directly to the battery?
also did you use an external SWR meter to check your antenna?

Check the ground. Make sure its grounded well on bare metal. To see if the ground is bad, or not making good connection, disconnect the antenna and turn it on. if it does not power up, that means your ground is bad, and it was grounding only through the antenna.

Make sure not to key up with out the antenna connected.

The calibrate needle wont move to the right to set whe trying to calibrate on cobra 29 ltd classic new radio

You have to press the transmit button to get the radio to send a signal that you can calibrate the SWR meter to. If you are pressing the transmit button and nothing is happening then it could be a blown final transistor, a bad switch, bad microphone connection etc.

I have had a Cobre 29 LTD Classic, a 29 NW LTD Classic and now a 29 LTD Chrome. It seems that the first two died because of possible bad antenna connections. I was able to calibrate the radios and adjust...

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

I want to calibrate my cobra 29 NW Ltd. Classic

Calibrate For SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/cobra/29ltd_bt/graphics/cobra_29ltd_bt_om.pdf
The CAL is only to calibrate meter for a swr check of you antenna system it does not calibrate radio.

29 LTD CB Radio: Calibrate cb radio...

The CAL is to calibrate meter for reading SWR (standing wave ratio) which is reflected power when transmitting back to receiver(radio) from antenna system.
This CAL switch position when selected and mic keyed uses the CAL knob to align the meter needle with inverted red triangle next to cal on meter. Then when you select SWR switch position meter will display accurately when mic is keyed for that channel. Now notice the difference when you go between channels 1 and 40. The ant led light will act as idiot light if it is not lit then you are most likely safe to transmit.
I say system because your vehicle, antenna and coaxial cable are all part of this system. When you have a high reading and have to trim you antenna this is really calibrating the antenna to the vehicles body which acts as a ground plane.

My cobra 29ltd cb radio will power on and recieve but will not transmitt. the transmitt light lights up but the meter will not move. what can I check?

I am assuming you have called out for a radio check and not gotten a reply, or even better tested it with friends radio. Just because the meter doesn't mover doesn't mean that its not transmitting.

So as long as you tested it with another radio, and it is not transmitting it could be any number of things. If you have never had antenna tuned so the swr is low, or your swr was high for a long time, your final transistor is most likely blown.

TX switching transistor could be blown, trace could be gummed up.

If your ant light is coming on, the is a problem with your antenna. Could be disconnected, and that can lead to a blown final.

At any rate, your problem most likely requires a tech. Take it to a repair shop.
