NEED TO BREAK THE BIOS PASSWORD ON MY SON'S DELL INSPIRON 8500

SERVICE TAG NUMBER HR9C831 , EXPRESS SERVICE CODE 38653573357

My son was given this laptop by a woman that lost the power supply and forgot the BIOS pass word.

Can you give us either a universal unlock code or tell us how to by pass the BIOS password. We tried removing the BIOS battery overnight but that didn't help. Evidentaly it has a high end chipset that does NOT use the BIOS battery to retain the password.

Thank you.

    hokuwho,

How long does the on-line ownership transfer take?

Precisely how do I try to add his computer to MY PRODUCTS?

    Thank you.

Well, I tried for over an hour to get DELL to help me and all they will do is parrot "We can't help you without the original owner's information and we won't input it from our reocrds for security purposes" and they said that for a laptop there were NO jumpers to reset it either.

What experience has anyone had with password resetting software from either spotmau or PCDoctor-Utilities in resolving these kinds of issues when we can't even get past the BIOS password?

    Thank you.

    Steve,

Thank you for you reply. Yes I realize the purpose of the theft deterence. However, IF you have a second or third party in the middle, then it is worthless.

Not only that but I don't believe it is a deterent because thievs do NOT care if it works or not. They are wiling to take the chancee that, like most users, you did NOT lock down the computer with a password and if it turns out that you did lock it down, they just throw it away because they have nothing invested. Either way, you will NOT be very likely to recover you computer.

DELL knows who the original registered owner is and how to contact her, because the TECH supervisor told me that she had it in front of her on the screen as we spoke. I told her that I did NOT want to know any of the informaiton on the original owner but asked if they could contact the original owner to see if the computer was stolen or transferred legitimately. Her excuse for not doing that was "That would be an invasion of her privacy if we contacted her." Thatis a very assinine excuse if they really want to protect the original owner from theft, because if they contacted the original owner and the computer was in fact stolen, then they could give law enforcement my contact information and possibly help the original owner recover her computer.

Not only that, there is a very easy and inexpensive to build gadget called a dongle that will by-pass all of the passwords. I already know how to build it, but no one seems to know if it wil just by-pass the password or if it will let me clear/change it too.

I would appreciate you trying to use the Latitude keygen too. The service tag is HR9C831 and the express service code is 38653573357.

    Thank you for trying.

    mybox258,

Thank you. DELL tells mme that the jumper thing is only good for dresktops. I don't know if that is true or not or if it applies to all brands.

Dell uses NVRAM which retains the password forever regardless of removing the battery as you now know. The service tag number is used with a keygen to generate a master password. As a Dell tech I can tell you that what I have done is to go to Dell's support site, add this laptop to your own products where you can enter the service tag number then ask Dell support for the master password which they will provide with their keygen.    This is the only way you can access the BIOS setup where you can choose a new password or disable the password. If the service tag number you enter shows another registered owner you can just have them do an online transfer to yourself. Then you will have full access to customer service.  Steve Medley

Don, I forgot to address the "How long..." question. It is all email stuff so it should be instant. You will see the drill on the transfer link I sent. Steve

Hi Don. frustrating I know but if you had ever had a laptop stolen as I have (3 times) you would appreciate the deterrent effect. That woman who gave your son the laptop need only provide her name if she ever was registered with Dell to transfer ownership. That is the best way. If that is not possible then tell me the model. I do have a keygen for Latitude. Steve

Nevermind about model I requested. I just noticed that it was Dell Inspiron. I have a Latitude keygen that I will try the service tag number on and post the results back to you just in case the algorithm is the same. I would have done that already but I realied that the Latitude keygen is on a floppy disk and I have zero computers with a floppy! I will find a client with a floppy drive and try it then. Steve

That dongle only works for Toshiba laptops. I am going to a friend's house this afternoon to use his floppy drive to enter your service tag and get a master password. It works for Latitudes and just may work for the Inspiron -it is worth a try. I have owned Dell laptops since 1997 and was frustrated by their OUTSOURCED tech support one too many times last year and bought a Fujitsu Lifebook to spite that, lol -like they care....but it made me feel like the mouse that roared :) I will post the results when I return, Don.

Usually there is a jumper to clear the cmos which will reset the bios password should be near the battery.
There is 3 prongs the jumper is on 2 you need to move it to cover the one that the jumper is not on.
Either that if there is only the jumper just remove it and then reseat it.
