Im having the same problem, but it wont go away. I took the aforementioned route of beating it a couple times, but to no avail. Any tips?

I had the same blue horizontal blue lines going across the LCD on playback with no sound. I gave it a couple solid blows on the bottom of the cam per "swifturtle" and it fixed the problem.

I dropped my camera in DC and ever since then the playback has been grainy with blue bars and no sound. A week ago i was fooling with it and it played back normally for about 20 minutes and ever since then i haven't been able to get it to work... hitting it and blowing it hasn't worked for me.

I tried the cleaning tape and still had the blue bars. So I tried the hit and still had the blue bars, probably because I'm female. The tape still had some recording time available so I decided to see what happened when I recorded. It played back with no blue bars and with sound. I rewound to the older recordings and was also able to play back normally. I put in another cassette and had blue bars again. I found a part of the tape that was not important and recorded for 1 minute and was able to play back normally. I put in the third and no blue bars.I know it it's only a matter of time before they come back because I had them before. I have a plan now- On every tape at the beginning of each recording I will leave a few minutes of space as a buffer just in case I need to record to stop the blue bars. Hope this helps somebody.

I have a 4 year old GS12, but apparently it is also submissive under physical duress. Two firm palm-whacks on the tape side, and the blue bars are gone. I love it. The down-side is that I had already researched and picked out my new Canon HD miniDV cam already. oh well, maybe next christmas. :(

I covered several threads that recommended buying a Mini DV cleaner and running it up to 4 times. They also suggested to change to change your video tape as it may have been the cause of the original problem. These solutions may have worked for many but not me. My camera was becoming progressively worse. It went to blue bars and no sound to no picture at all...just blue. After using a cleaner 4 times I became frustrated to the point I was going to buy a new camera. However, with the camera still playing, I did the typical guy thing and rolled up my fist and gave it a good hit along side of it. Remarkably it went back to just the blue bars. I hit it again and it went back to a perfect picture. I'm not saying this will work for you and hitting it too hard could make things work but I was at a point where I didn't care any more and took a chance.

Recording and Playback error

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I am having the same probelms, and I would appreciate any help with this since I am shooting a childrens camp and I am fairly isolated and don't have the time to swop cameras or send it to get fixed. I need to know if the recording is fine (video and audio) but the playback is not working correctly...or is it not recording correctly or playing back correctly. The sound cuts out from time to time in playback. Thank you.

TRV138 Audio only on playback.

The video heads are clogged or broken. Remove the cassette cover and in the middle back of the mech is a cylinder, this is the drum assy. You can gently spin the drum and look for a black piece of carbon (tiny). This is actually one of the heads. You can take a swab (Q-tip) with liquid head cleaner and very gently clean the heads (more than one) wipeing horizontally, never vertically to clean the heads. Inspect for broken heads as well.

Blue Bars and No Sound

My advice is that you should by a DV cleaning cassette. Put this in the camera and run it for 10 to 20 seconds only. running the cleaning cassette for a long time may damage the head.
good luck!

Horizontal bars on playback plus sometimes no recorded picture

Not a solution sorry, but just to note that I have the same problem on TRV30e. It's intermittant an relatively rare, so haven't bothered getting it fixed. Seems related to certain types of DV tapes - if I change tape the problem often goes away.

Blue bars across video

I have the same problem with my PV-GS14. You have to find the last spot you recorded in, pause it, then switch to record, and just record something for a couple of seconds. Switch back to playback, and it should be fine. Neonlaundry, I read your other posts, and it seems we both have the same problems. If you find a solution, please post it. Thnks.
