The drivers for that computer is here same as the rescue cd which you can order from HP.

If you want to buy a bootup cd or a rescue cd at the top you will see on the bar you will see how to buy click on that and you can contact them and purchase what you need.

Try to check if you have a diskette or usb thumbdrive on your computer. If there is, remove them first then reboot computer again. This is because your system, whichever is the first boot up device doesnt see any system bootup files on it.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for using Fixya.

If you are not able to get the disc tray to open itself, you can manually open it before starting the computer by pressing a paperclip into the tiny hole on the front. This manually releases the tray. Then start it up, and try to enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2. In the BIOS setup, make sure that the bootup priority is set to the CDROM drive. Restart, and hope for the best! :)

On boot up laptop states it can't find the operating system

this sounds like you need to repair the boot sector. this usually happens when a hard disks boot sector becomes corrupt or damaged. to fix this you must use the windows install disk to install recovery console. put the disk in the CDROM drive, reboot, (you may need to press F2 upon bootup to enter setup and choose to boot from the CDROM instead of HDD) once computer is configured to boot to the CD drive reboot and choose "repair" when prompted by the cd. once the repair prompt is up you must run the 'fixmbr' command which will copy boot files back to your computer. hope this helps. please rate me and thanks for choosing enterprise computing solutions.

I didnt get a boot disc with my computer and would like to make a copy

On a new computer that didn't come with a reboot disk, they create a hidden partition on the hard drive to store this info. Provided that the hard drive has NEVER been re-formatted, it will still be there. Some manufatuers allow you to make a boot disk, others don't, in either case they do allow you to wipe your system and re-install their software at bootup. Hope this helps.

Bootup

Ed,

Are you referring to the white underscore in the upper left corner of the monitor on bootup? It is very likely that a device driver is hanging on boot up.

To find out which one:
1. Upon restart, press F8 (several times) to force the Windows startup menu to load.
2. When the menu loads, select the option that allows you to manually confirm or deny the loading of each device driver.
3. When you have discovered which driver is not loading, perform another reboot, and do the step by step confirmation again, and say NO to that driver.
4. Finish loading windows, and correct the issue with the offending driver.
5. Reboot yet again, and allow windows to load normally.

I am selling my HP Pavilion dv4000 series laptop, and I want to reboot the software to make it like it was when I first purchased the computer. I have all of the backup disks. Just don't know how to get...

When you bootup the laptop, press F8 and you should see a boot from what screen, not the Safe Mode options boot screen. In this list of what or where to boot from there may be a "boot from recovery partition'. This option would reinstall the setup you had wehn you purchased the laptop.

If you don't see that then yes you need to use the backup discs to reset your machine. You start with the laptop off and put disc 1 in the cdrom and start up the laptop. This is dependent on your boot up order, found in system setup screens F10 when booting, having the cdrom ahead of your hard drive in the bootup order.
