Usually a piece of plastic from the cover turn a switch on and off. Maybe is this bit broken.
if not, unplug the printer for several hours,
take off paper and cartridge and choke the printer a little bit maybe is the switch stuck due to spread ink or dust or something else.
If still stuck, open it and find those switch, try to play with it power on. Nothing happen? change the printer ...:(

Problem with my Canon Pixma MP500

Try a hard reset first: Unplug the printer from power source and PC, wait about 5 minutes and replug. Should the issue recur, then the cover sensor is probably faulty. That is the reason you are getting this error repeatedly. The only solution is to send the printer in for servicing and get the sensor repaired/replaced.

In any case, here are the steps to close the inner cover:

1. Press the Open Button (1) to open the Paper Output Tray (2).

2. Raise the Scanning Unit until it stops.

3. Close the Inner Cover

4. Now close the Scanning Unit.

You can also try reinstalling the printer software along with any patches, updates, etc from the Canon website. Make sure you uninstall the existing software first though..

If neither works, then its time to take the printer in for servicing. You could try to contact them by phone first:
  • Toll-free live technical support** Monday through Friday 10:00 AM ET to 10:00 PM ET (excluding holidays) at 1-800-828-4040
  • The location of the ASF nearest you for carry-in service at 1-800-828-4040
  • Toll-free TDD Support Line for the Hearing Impaired Monday - Saturday (excluding holidays) at 1-866-251-3752
  • Technical Support for Customers in Canada at 1-800-OK-CANON
Hope that helps!

What do I do when my printer Canon MP970 says "inner cover is open"?

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp970#BrochuresAndManuals

Download the online manual for your operating system and see if the 'inner cover is open' error is listed. If not, then try to chat with a canonusa.com tech about the problem.

I looked up the 'inner cover is open' error on the FAQs on the support site, but there was no listing of it.

I think that talking to 1-800-OK CANON, might help as well.

Good luck on this repair.

MP780 "check printer"

5200 is a printhead error, you may just need a new printhead. They do wear out, and just like a light bulb, they go out when you least expect. The part number is QY6-0049-000.
