Open this link; go to the FAQ's for an MD760/MD761 and it solved my similar problem for my phone. Primarily, you will be resetting your system (almost like rebooting) and if necessary, deregister and follow with registering. I did not have to do the last part (deregister), but it does work. Good luck.

My handset displays CONNECTING...
Move the handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range.
This is what was listed in the Vtech Manual.
What I suggest is not just powering it off, but remove battery and wait a couple of minutes. Put battery back in and try it. The other thing I suggest is a new battery or switching it temporarily with a phone that works, to see if that helps before you buy a new one. If the battery is weak it will have trouble reaching the base.
I had this problem - just found the solution. The two charging stands
aren't the same. One is a base (that plugs into the wall) and the other
a charging cradle. I think that each handset needs to be placed in the
base to "register" it.
So, here's what I did: place the unregistered handset in the base & both should work.
CAN’T CONNECT 1. Displays when one handset is on a call and the other handset presses PHONE. 2. Displays when base power is off and PHONE is pressed. You’ll also hear a sad tone. 3. Displays when an out-of-range dial fails to connect. MAKE SURE THE HANDSETS ARE FULLY CHARGED. MAKE SURE BOTH ARE TURNED OFF, OR NOT IN THE TALK MODE. CHECK THE BATTERY TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN SECURELY IF DROPPED IT COULD HAVE JARRED LOOSE.
