I had the same problem, wifi would periodically disconnect, and all my other wifi stuff would work fine. New computer, win8. Tried the updates none of them worked. I fixed it by going into the control panels, then selecting Device Manager, in there goto Network Adapters and click the little arrow so you can see devices there. Then right click the Dell Wireless adapter. Then click on the Power Management tab. Uncheck the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". After I did that no more issues.
Same issue with me. I've found the solution. I'm not the most technical person in the world so you won't hear any fancy computer talk during this post (i.e. config, ICP, modem, protocol, IDE ATA/ATAPI, etc).
The problem is with the power saving mechanism for Win8. When the PC is left on and it goes to power saving mode. Part of the 'power saving' is to turn off the networking device. So it still shows the connection, but the device to run it is not turned on. In other words, you have the car, its running fine, but you don't have the keys. To fix it, do the following:
Control Panel>
Under 'Devices and Printers' click on 'Device Manager'
Under Device Manager expand 'Network Adapters' (that means click the little triangle).
Click on 'Dell Wireless'
Go to the Power Management Tab
Uncheck "Allow the computer to turnoff this device to save power"
Reboot computer and enjoy the fine advantages of the World Wide Web!!!
I looked at this setting on one of my computers that actually works, the this setting is unchecked. So this must have happened during the last windows 8 update.
Hope this helps.

Look on the keyboard and see if it has a key with a symbol for a wireless device. If it does, click it with the FN (function) to enable or disable it.
You can also see if there is a switch on the front or sides of the laptop for a wireless device.
Finally, go to start>control panel>system. Access the device manager. Click the plus next to network devices and see if any wireless devices are listed.

Normally when an operating system is installed, it includes a factory reset on a drive D. To see if you have one, open my computer from the menu to view available drives. D drive should say "recovery" .if it does click on it to view the drive's contents and either click on Setup.exe or something.exe and follow the prompts. If your installation did not include a recovery partition, you may be able to download the version of windows from dell using your product key, Hope this helps
