The tray will not open on my RCA DVD Player model DRC 220

It seems that the track (carriage) is proberally damaged or needs cleaning, open it out and have a look at the track that takes in the disc if it has dust clean it out or you can open and close it bu hand to get it loose a bit.
If that dont work the motor that pulls in the track or sends it out has a band on it, it might be slack or worn or even dried up and lost elasticity, test it by pulling it in and out a few time to see if it snaps, if you think its worn are slack replace it with a rubber band or a smaller size to the band...
the last think to check is the motor it self.if the abose fails you'll need to change the motor

I met a lady with the same problem. I had to open the unit (use caution/check warranty) and I found out the foam pad that holds the discs in place fell off of its holder. If you place this back on, the unit should work again just fine.

try to find an original remote in a pawn shop, sometimes they have extra remotes because broken dvd players, or other reasons they only know.

make sure that the dvd is unplugged from the outlet and remove the screws of the cover, you should be able to access the dvd from inside the player without the cover on.
I hope this helps
