When you change the selector switch, do you hear the relays inside the unit? Is your muting button activated (found to the lower left of your volume knob)? Do you have speakers connected to A or B or both?

My Sony STR-DE685 Receiver out of the blue now has loud hum when using the tuner only. All other inputs work great without any issues. Seems like a filter burned out. If that is the case, does...

In receivers, there are different power supplies or power supply outputs for the receiver and amplifier sections so you can have separate failures with one area not affecting the other. From your description, I think the (probably lower voltage) section for the receiver has either lost a cheap filter capacitor or a regulator IC. Neither of these are expensive parts but I can't know what labor costs in your area might be. An honest tech shouldn't ask more than ~$100 US for that kind of repair.

Sony STR-DE685, home stereo, center speaker cuts out, as does left surround. tried everything. Worth fixing? or shitcan it?

It all depends on what's wrong it and if it's worth the price to fix it to YOU, doesn't it? If it's really broken only a tech can look at it and tell you the cost to fix it.

Have you eliminated the individual speakers and cables first? Or looked in the manual?

If you have checked the speakers and wiring, the right channel has a audio driver or output problem, which explains the low volume, static, and distortion. A service technician will be required to fix the receiver so it will balance the left side.

The receiver works ok until the vol is reduced and the right front channel drops out. Increasing the vol usually picks up the dead speaker but it drops out again when the vol is reduced. I've tried...

Make sure the audio level on the left and right channels are balanced. Check the menu for audio levels to adjust and make sure they are not maladjusted. If all levels are adjusted properly then the volume control or volume control circuity may be at fault.

5.1 Surround sound not working

Maybe the surround processor is having a bad day... My kenwood would do similar and a reset was necessary to correct. Have you tried resetting the system? On my Sony STR DE 597 this is accomplished by powering off. Then while holding the 2 channel button down (front face plate) power on. A reset message is displayed. Your model may be similar but check your manual or download the PDF of the manual from Sony's support website. Hope this helps

The sound goes off and says "unprotected"

check speaker wire connections on the back of receiver
bare wires should never touch each other or the metal chassis
if all connections and speakers seem ok the problem is internal witch can go from blown power supply to shorted output devices and everything in between , and as always look for repair shop in your area, do not attempt to do it yourself, firehazard and electric shock are the things we all want to avoid ;)
