Do you see that gray line from the being when you boot your computer? or does it just show in windows?

If that the case, uninstall the driver for you vedio card and download one from dell website and install it.

Try plugging into an external monitor.. if the screen looks ok then it is most likely the laptop LCD screen is bad.. had the same thing on a HP laptop .. replaced the screen and all was well again with the world...

Once you start getting lines in the screen that means the pixels are starting to go bad and you would need to replace the screen to fix that issue.

I have a red line in the same notebook, dell insp 1501

It's a faulty screen.
Here is how to remove old screen.
Then order new screen by DELL PART NUMBER (green), which is on the back of the screen and looks something like that:

If you will replace screen with any other (not with dell part number), then you risking, that screen will be dark and adjustment of brightness will not work.

Black screen on 1501 Inspiron laptop

I wen t to Dell website and did search for 1501 Inspiron laptop. After I found the product, I entered "black screen" and did another search. The search brought up 3 problems. One of them had several of the problems I had encountered, including black screen, horizontal lines, blue screen at times.
The solution was to download and update my Video driver. This seems to have solved my issues.
