GregL provided a very good solution set. AVG is a very decent anti-virus protection program. You *can* update it with the latest definitions (someone said you can't but I think he misinterpreted the update as a version update).

I would recommend one more piece of software: Sygate Personal Firewall. It is much better than the default Windows firewall, and it is free.

THE BEST, BAR NONE, IS WEB ROOT SPY SWEEPER WITH ANTI VIRUS. I SWEAR BY IT AND HAVE IT ON ALL MY COMPUTERS. NORTON SUCKS AS WELL AS ANYTHING FROM SYMANTIC.

I HAVE TRIED MANY AND SPY SWEEPER PROTECTS FROM OVER 800,00 THREATS AND UPDATES ARE ADDED DAILY. JUST FOR KICKS I ALSO ADDED AVAST, WHICH IS A FREE DOWNLOAD ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM AND I SOMETIMES GO TO THE POPULAR SITES FOR VIRUSES TO SEE HOW WELL IT INTERCEPTS VIRUSES AND SMILE AS THE TROJAN, BACKDOOR AND OTHER VIRUSES ARE AUTO QUARANTINED.

OH, YA CAN ALMOST HEAR 'EM SCREAM :-)

GOOD LUCK!

Be careful when using symantec, it is a real resource hog! It does a good job, but is also expensive and costs annually to use. I use all the same items as GregL except i have had a lot of problems with SP3 :/ then again i normally install it on a working machine, and it messes somthing up. On a fresh install of windows XP it should do fine (SP3 that is)

I always do this after re-installing Windows:

1. I perform all Windows updates.
2. I install AVG 8.0 Free Edition and update it.
3. I install Windows Defender and update it.
4. I install SpyBot Search and Destroy and update it.
5. I install Adaware 2008 and update it.

You should be protected and ready to roll.

I use xp.. i download a file in internet after that ,everytime i start the computer theres always a virus(i have avira) but cant remove it..

Keep updating avira always and install spyware terminator to check is it spyware or not because avira free version only for virus but there is something like spyware, adaware, malware etc. Just try spyware terminator, update avira and if possible install Comodo firewall and block the unknown applications connecting to internet.

Try cleaning the unnecessary files using ATF cleaner (Simple and good) link below.
