Question about RCA D52W23 52" HDTV CRT TV

1 Answer

Older 36 inch rca crt tv broken

The TV worked perfectly fine until I was transporting it.  I had it upright in my truck tied up.  Somehow it tilted over onto the side of the truck bed.  When I got out of the truck it was leaning diagonally with the plastic right above the screen leaning onto the truck bed.  So thats where the impact was.  When I brought it inside the TV starts buzzing as soon as you plug the cord in before you even do anything.  It buzzes pretty loudly and near the back where the power cord goes into the TV.  The TV does not work at all anymore.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

To transport a loewe spheros 42 plasma unit with rotating stand does the tv unit detach from the stand? I understand that the plasma tv should be transported in an upright position only is this true?

Yes, it should be transported in upright position.
When we moved, our moving company arranged a crating company to crate our Spheros unit. They built a crate around the TV and secured it in an upright position along with the rotating stand. They then put a tilt sensor (you get the serial number of the tilt sensor) to make sure that the moving people don't tilt the crate. They also un-crate it at your destination. The only problem is that the TV is already quite heavy to begin with (~180 lbs), and with the crate, it becomes almost impossible for the movers move it in perfect upright position....though our movers really tried hard.

Get a cable box from the cable company it will be cheaper than repairing the tuner. Then you use the tuner from the cable box instead.

I have an RCA 36 inch tv, the color is messed up, it has a round circle and it will not change channels

If the set wasn't dropped or physically dammaged the chances of it being the picture tube is very small.
The set is probably magnetized and needs degaussing (demagnetizing).
All CRT type TV's have an internal demagnetizing circuit that is engaged when the set is first turned on after being off for the day.
If this circuit is working then you sometimes hear a "bonk" sound (about 1/2 a second long when the set is first turned on. If this circuit isn't working the set will become magnetized over time and will have to be degaussed using a degauss coil available at a TV repair shop (cost aprox. $35.00) and you should have the circuit checked at the same time. A set will also become magnetized if a large speaker (magnet) or motor is close to the TV. Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Without disassembling the set (removal of the back), there is no way to determine what might have been damaged and further operation without finding and correcting the problem may could cause further damage and may be unsafe. In many CRT sets, the main board is not very secure and is normally held by slots either side of it. It may have been jarred out of the slots and shorted something on the trace or component side. If would be safe (unplugged of course) to remove the rear housing with the 4-6 screws holding it and at least visually examine it inside; the problem may be easy to spot and correct.
However, any kind of sharp shock to the CRT (picture tube) may have misaligned it inside, making the picture geometry and color alignment impossible.
If your set is not compatible with the coming HDTV standard, you might want to consider replacing your set. I suggest though, that you take a look at this article describing the pros & cons of CRT TVs:
CRTs or not?
As a service tech, I would also suggest you poke around here (Fixya) to see how others are faring with their various kinds of flat-panel and big screen sets; way too many are dying like flies.

RCA 36 inch ---channels keep changing

Mine did this and I took the back off of it to remove the button panel on top of the tv. It un- snaps from the inside and pulls straight out. My channel down button was messed up but it lookd fine. It has three prongs on one side of it and two on the other. I clipped the two prong side of the switch and put it back together. Works fine now with remote. Be careful as the set picture tube holds high voltage for a long time when unpluged. Unplug overnight and then work on it.

Mike-It looks like the power supply is going on your tv-it can be replaced. This happens, usually, when little kids are playing wth the remote or power button on the tv. Turn it off and on a whole bunch of times in a row, kids love to do that, and it burns out the power supply part- to make a CRT tv like your RCA36 incher- which is a beautiful machine- I have the RCA/PROSCAN 36 incher-LAST longer...You should always wait 5 min between turning it off and on. Don't ever sell it. This one is worth fixing. It has better color and sound Than the new plasmas and lcds-The Pros know this. Be carefull, they might try and talk you out of it-so they can fix it and have it for themselves. So what if it's not High Deff. It's a great set.

Mine did the same thing. Just happened to have a worthless Best Buy service contract. The tech came out and said that it was the power supply and or the fly back something or other. He then prodceeded to tell me that he could not get parts for my 2 year old tv. You might check with a local tv repair shop and get some estmates on replacing these 2 parts.but at 80-100 bucks and hour for labor....
