We have a hotpoint frontloading washer/dryer, during the wash cycle we
heard a loud snapping noise and it turned out the catch on the door had
snapped. we have been able to duct tape the door shut in order to let
it run the rest of the wash (it was half full of water). is this easily
fixed, or are we going to have to get a new washer? i am hoping it's
something we can do, or is easily fixed before christmas. we haven't
had it very long, but our landlord bought it second-hand, so i don't
know how old it actually is.

What you need is a new door latch assy. To fit, remove all screws that hold the 2 halves of the door together, and prize the 2 halves apart, be careful the door glass does not fall to the floor and break.
Fit the new door latch, and reassemble door.
That should solve your problem.
