Gateway laptop powers up but screen does not come up.

Power lights come on the battery charging light is on when plugged in, the fan turns on but the screen does not come up. Might I have voltage issues?The laptop screen is black yet I know the system is booting. Pluged in ext monitor with no success. Could the graphics chip be bad? Is there a button stuck?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls try:

  • invert the laptop;
  • remove the panel lid/cover;
  • remove the memories;
  • clean with a hard pencil eraser;
  • re-install, try again;
  • alternately, try again with the external monitor;
  • once you feel that is has booted to Windows, press Fn + F? keys;
  • the F? key would be the function key with the small monitor icon;
  • you may need to press a couple of times to cycle on the different choices, LCD, LCD + external monitor, external monitor only.
Pls post back any updates/development.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Bad video card. Needs to be replaced.
Since, I see you got a nvidia 6150 go card I'll suggest you to check if your laptop is among those listed in the following link (I'm pretty sure it is among those in the list)
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...77&lc=en&cc=us

I had an identical problem with my old dv2412ca, where I can't even access the bios. Although you can reboot multiple times (8-10 times), if you're lucky you might get a boot. Once you get a boot I suggest you to backup all your important files to an external device (HDD, DVD, etc). Because there's nothing you can do to fix it. It's a nvidia chipset problem and HP will need to replace your motherboard or they'll give you another laptop.

    The notebook starts booting and the screen is blank right from the beginning, correct? If that’s the case, then it is not a video driver related problem. When you have a bad or corrupted video driver, you still should see an image on the screen when you turn on the notebook. With a bad video driver the screen might turn black when Windows starts loading but not before that.
    Try this. Start the laptop without the hard drive installed and see if you can get any image on the screen. If the laptop starts with video when the hard drive is removed, probably you have a bad hard drive

    Have you mishandled it? an out of place memory card will do the same thing. Remove the memory, re-seat, and re-try.

    Laptop won't power on?

    If your laptop won't power on or stay on, check a few things:

    1.Ensure your battery is holding power. Some laptops will auto shut-off if the battery won't hold a charge. In that case, replace your battery and retry. Check your charging lights or indicators to see if your laptop is getting power and charging.

    2.Check your AC to DC converter (the little black adapter you plug in your AC outlet.) This converts AC power into DC power. Is it abnormally hot? If so, it is probably burned out. Replace it. Note- high heat is not a true indicator of malfunctioning. It can be dead and cold as well. No power indicators on your laptop could be a sign of a dead or bad converter also. Converters WILL get hot (this is normal.) If it is REAL hot (to touch), then this is not good.

    3.Check your power cord. Are there nicks or cuts? If so, unplugg it from the AC power and repair with electrical tape- better yet, replace it. Many computer salvage stores carry power adapter cords. They're cheap.

    4. Check your laptop lid switch. If it is broken, you may have power but your screen may not come on. This is usually a little button or mechanism located close to the lid hinge that turns on or off your screen when your lid is open or closed respectively. Normally the operator does not push this button. These are fragile and broken easily on some laptop models. Sometimes these can be fixed, more often they will require replacements. If you aren't an expert repair person, get a technician to repair/replace it for you. Opening up laptops is a very delicate operation and much more difficult to repair than desktops. It may be worth it to spend the money for repair.

    5. If you have tried these easy solutions and it still won't power on, then your problem lies elswhere. You may have an internal power switch or voltage regulator problem.. Internal problems will require professional help.

    Also, if your laptop powers on, but nothing is shown on the screen, it may be that the screen backlight or invert has gone bad. If you shine a light on the screen and are able to see something running (barely), then there's no reason to replace the entire screen (which is expensive), but with a little research you can figure out how to get the replacement parts for the backlight and inverter; there are also online guides for opening up the laptop and replacing these specific parts.

    For example:http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_8.htm

    This whole site has some good information, and links to purchasing the equipment:http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccflmeasure.h...

S/nLUWCX08006942365AC1601 WONT BOOT UP

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning,lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.

Gateway NV5337u Laptop worked yesterday, now only the blue lite comes on when plugged in. No fans or any other sounds.

We might need to talk more, to clarify to solve this promblem. First of all, have you done any update at all to the system? So by what you mean is that when you would go ahead and press the power on button, you get nothing at all... I mean dead, no lights, no fan, completely dead right? But when you have the charger plugged in, the battery light come on only saying it's charging? Is this blue light the battery indicator light, if it is, then that means your battery is fully charged. Try taking out your battery and just using the power adapter and press the power button to see if anything comes on, like fan, lights etc, then try it without the power adapter and only the battery. If you get nothing at all coming at all, I would assume your power button is bad or loose, or the wiring that connects to your powerbutton is loose because i have a gateway Nv series too, and the power button is located where the screen hinges is at, and I'm afraid that when opening and closing, it became loose. This happened to my Emachine, and all I did was took the plastic portion above the keyboard out, and followed the cable ribbon to see if it was loose, or became little disconnect. I kinda just tugged in a little bit and everything worked. I believe it may become loose. Now if the case is that the computer does power on and you get blinking lights, then we are looking at something else.

I was using it and turned it off and i came and turn it on and hp logo didnt appear on the screen it was only the lights and blank background please help me.is my sisters laptop and i took it without...

well. be sure the power is plugged in

then pull the battery out of the laptop

press the power button down

look at the little lights indicating power on .. battery charging and hard drive activity

if the power light comes on..

then the screen is the problem

if the hard drive comes on after say 10 seconds

it is definitely the screen

put the battery back in.. be sure it is in solid

put the power pack in the wall

if the battery charge light comes on

then the power is to the laptop and battery connections are good

so the laptop may have overheated...

wait five minutes

try to power it on again

if the fan does not power on...

it has a bad fan...

quietly set it where ya got it from then

Gateway 450ROG, will not start. Red DVD/CD ROM

I have the very same problem, the Drive light turns red, the screen is "black" and the battery charging light indicator on the front is off. No differance if I'm traying to power up on battery or AC-adapter.

Before this problem appeared I had problems where the laptop was powering off, with no warning, and I had to restart it. This happened several times and was going on for about a week before it died totally. Can it be the CMOS battery on the mother board? Anyone having clue what the problem could be?

replace the battery or have it tested. If these batteries don't have a minimum charge the machine will not boot into windows & will just shut down.You might try checking the battery condition with the "battery conditioner" in the bios

Sounds like a voltage regulator. Have the system diagnosed at a repair shop. Sorry I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but is probably the correct answer.
