Question about Actiontec GT701R DSL Modem

Adding 2nd computer to msn broadband

I currently have msn broadband through Qwest Connect Silver residential service, using Actiontec modem #GT701R. I want to connect a 2nd computer, HP a6610t, which has a 56k modem built in. I'd like these computers to work independently, not sharing info. The computers could be used in the same room or in rooms close to each other that each have phone jacks. It would not be a big problem if they could not be used at the same time.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the built-in 56K modem of the HP-A6610T will not work with a broadband line. It will however work with the regular telephone but it would require a separate dial-up account. If your requirement is for them to share the broadband connection, then a router would have to be used. To make each computer not be able to access each other would entail removing any shared folders on each. The only thing they would be sharing is the Internet access.

Pls post back should you want to explore and consider this solution. However, should you reject this solution, then all my subsequent postings may no longer be viewable by you.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

If the computers are with in cabling distance to each other I would suggest a router and hook the cable modem directly to the router so so each computer does not have to do the routing services. ============ If you are going to connect ONLY 2 computers to each other, you don not need a router, or a hub. All you need is a "cross-over cable". It is a type of RJ45 Network Cable that you can find anywhere. You would however need another Network Card, AKA Ethernet Card. The extra NIC (short form for network interface card) will be put in your main computer that is connected to you cable/dsl modem. You would basically have your modem connected to your computer through one card, and the crossover cable connected from the same computer to the other one through the other NIC Card.

That Way, You don't have to spend about $120 for a router, and you also don't need a hub.

IF you decide to buy even another computer and want to connected it to the network, you will than have to consider buying a router, or a hub.

Routers are better because simply saying, routers intake the signal, and regenerate it to all the computers connected to it whereas Hubs split the signal up.
Therefore, hubs are almost tripple times cheaper. The Crossover cable method only workds with two computers.

Interms of the routers, I think Linksys is a good and affordable router. (get the Linksys 4 port router)

You will need to get a Lan / Ethernet card to the 2nd computer. and connect it to the dsl modem also, if there are no open slots you will need to get a hub or a switch in the middle.

This one for example http://www.bizrate.com/networkhub_switches/trendnet-te100-s5-network-switch--pid607324985/compareprices.html

Plug your internet into the router then, the router to the computer. Go to your network settings and run the network setup. This will change the settings in windows to except the router into the network. You may have to restart the computer. This should give you internet access to your computer through your router.

I am running qwest DSL through a Linksys wrt160N that is brand new. it will work next to the router, but not upstairs or in the basement which is less than 15 meters. The upstairs bedroom is directly above...

If you have concrete floor slabs the the wireless signal from the Linksys will have a difficult time penetrating the floor slabs.
The wireless card in the computers will show a low signal strength.
Try altering the Linksys aerial to a horizontal position and also positioning the Linksys to another location.

You could be getting interference form other wireless sources, check the wireless channels of other wireless router/access points in your area. If they are broadcasting on the same channel then configure your Linksys to broadcast on an unused channel or one that has the weakest signal strength.
If none of these methods work then I would suggest you run network cables from the Linksys to upstairs and downstairs and not use the wireless connection.
If network cabling option is not an option then consider extending the wireless range with wireless repeater access points.

I have had this same problem with Qwest using a new iMac and MacBook on the Actiontec modem. Qwest did two things: first we reset the modem which was fairly simple and took only about 5 minutes. However, this fix lasts only a few weeks and it comes back. I have just ordered a new modem since there seems to be a problem with the Actiontec device with the newer high speed internet.
I'd try the reset before doing anything else. Good luck.

Want to use Dlink DI-514 with Qwest modem to hardwire 2 computers

Believe it or not, Actiontec modems from Qwest are setup as a router already (even though ports are missing from it). You should use a switch instead of another router. Otherwise you will have to configure the DI-514 to act as a switch rather than a router. This is done by assigning a new starting IP address into your DI-514. By default both routers use 192.168.0.1 as the default. You will have to plug the DI-514 seperately into a computer (to take it off the network) and assign a new starting IP address for the DI-514 such as 10.150.1.1 for example. Then you will be able to get it work. I would strongly recommend using a switch instead and turn the wireless on the modem itself (this is why the modem is the router). It will save you some headaches if the power goes out.
